Sarsfields 3-10 Glenavy 2-7
Sarsfields moved clear at the top of Group 2 of the Intermediate Football Championship when they beat Glenavy at the Bear Pit, to make it two wins from two, and are now the only unbeaten team in the group.
Niall McKenna got the Paddies up and running with a point after just a minute and a half and just two minutes later centre forward Gary Lennon grabbed the first of his team’s three goals to put them in a strong position.
When Liam Mitchell added another point on four minutes the gap was out to five and things got even better as Kevin Floyd grabbed goal number two on ten mintues and when Cormac Murray added a point just on the first half water break the game was as good as won.
It was 22 minutes before Glenavy raised their first flag when Patrick Gallagher pointed from play and he added another five minutes later. Niall McKenna came back with a point for Sarsfields, but Gallagher struck again in first half injury time as he fired in a goal to give his team new hope.
When Gary Lennon scored the Paddies third goal early in the second half there was no way back for Glenavy, who by this stage were down to fourteen men. Michael Ferris and Sam Walsh added to the Sarfields total with points apiece before Fergal Henry came back with a point for the visitors. Henry added further points on 43 and 50 minutes, both from frees and corner back Ruairi Forrester came up from defence to score his team’s second goal.
However by this stage it was a case of too little too late, though the Glenavy men will take some consolation from their second half performance.
Om Friday evening Glenavy host St Paul’s at Chapel Hill while Sarfields travel to Lisburn to take on Naomh Padraig, where a win would all but guarantee a semi-final place.
