Creggan took control of group four of this year’s Antrim senior football championship following a nine-point win over Gort na Móna. After last weeks win over St Galls, the Kickhams had too much for a Gorts side that had its resources stretched to breaking point.
Already down seven players to a Covid outbreak, Niall Ward also had to plan without a further four players through injury and suspension, but to their credit the Gorts battled gamely over the hour to frustrate last years runners up, but in the end, Creggan had just too much power and class in all areas of the pitch to claim a deserving win.
It was a contest that never got anywhere near championship pace and intensity but Creggan will be glad to have avoided a potential banana skin. Ricky Johnston and Eunan McAteer were more than able for anything that the homeside offered in attack while Kealan McCann and Aidan McKeown dominated proceedings in the middle third. In attack Martin Johnston and Fintan Burke were full of running and endeavour while Ruairi McCann was a constant thorn in the side of countless Gort na Móna defenders.
While the hosts defended manfully, they lacked a cutting edge in attack to seriously trouble the visitors back division and any Gort na Móna attack, was quickly stopped in its tracks.
Sean Duffin opened the scoring with less than sixty seconds on the clock before Aidan McDonagh equalised from a free after Shea McStrovey was fouled.
Creggan dominated possession from here on but could only register a further two points before the first half waterbreak through Ruairi McCann and Eunan McAteer.
The pattern of the second quarter mirrored that of the first and scores from Jamie McCann, from a free, and one from Odhran McLarnon gave the visitors a comfortable four point lead as half time approached.
Gort na Móna did manage to raise a second white flag before the break when McDonagh kicked his second of the game and at half time Creggan lead 0-5 to 0-2.
The third quarter proved to be more productive for Creggan as points from Martin Johnston, Kealan McAteer and two Ruairi McCann frees pushed their lead out to seven points, 0-9 to 0-2.
Darren Boyd kicked the Gorts only score of the second half from a free on 48 minutes before Eunan McAteer and Jamie McCann brought their respective tallies to two points in the dying minutes to wrap up a nine point victory.
