Today the community of Creggan took to the roads as they became the first GAA club in Ireland to organise and run their own marathon, with half marathon and 10k distances also available.
Over 120 people took part in the event around the fantastic Shane’s Castle Estate which was organised to support Kickhams GAA club, Creggan Primary School and 5 charities that mean a lot to the people of Creggan – Aware, NI Children’s Hospice, Air Ambulane, MacMillan and Chest Heart & Stroke.
The marathon runners set off at 10am and set a great pace throughout the run with Dan Maguire being the first runner home. It was difficult to call who came first in the half marathon and 10ks as people started at various times, but the main thing was that everyone had a great day and enjoyed both the scenery and craic on the run.
The club would like to thank everyone who took part in the run, to the Heart & Sole fundraising committee who organised the event, to everyone who volunteered by providing directions, looking after the catering and just generally helping in any way.
The club would also like to thank all of the sponsors who helped make today happen and in particular the Tullyglass House Hotel who were the main sponsor.
Finally, it was great to be able to host our first big community event in quite some time and we hope all the runners and walkers enjoy a good long soak in the bath tonight.
