McCann points Ergnat’s to victory

A great exhibition of point taking by Connlaodh McCann inspired St. Ergnat’s Moneyglass to victory over St. Gall’s in an exciting U17 Football League division 2 final at Dunsilly on Sunday. The South West side held a slender one point lead at the half way stage but were rocked by a goal from Niall Fallon in the 17th minute of the second half which gave the Milltown youngsters the lead for the first time since the 13th minute.

St. Ergnat’s refused to panic however as the stepped up their game substantially in the final quarter to hold their opponents scoreless while adding six unanswered points to run out deserving three point winners in the end.

St. Gall’s were first out of the starting traps with Niall Fallon pointing them ahead after 22 seconds but it would be a further 18 minutes before either side would score again as both teams displayed nervousness in front of the posts.

Padraig O’Muirigh pointed a free to put the city side two in front but it would be a further five minutes before Connlaodh McCann would open St. Ergnat’s account. That was in the 23d minute with the lively Niall Fallon replying immediately to restore St. Gall’s two point advantage.

Moneyglass were beginning to find their feet however and in the run in to half time they hit three unanswered point to lead by one at the interval. Jammie McLaughlin fired over in the 26th minute and Kevin McMcCann and Connlaodh McCann added two more to edge them in front at the short whistle.

Connlaodh McCann and Kevin McCann extended the St. Ergnat’s lead to three within three minutes of the second half and at this stage things seemed to be swing in favour of the South West side but St. Gall’s responded and Manus Crossan pointed from play and then added another from a free to leave one it again with only 8 minutes of the new half gone.

Jamie McLaughlin edged the Marian Hill side two in front once more but again the Milltown boys replied through Liam Lynn to keep the contest finally balanced at the end of the third quarter.

A Niall Fallon goal with 13 minutes remaining moved St. Gall’s ahead and appeared to have handed them the initiative but the Milltown boys would not score again as St. Ergnat’s produced a storming finish to dominate the closing exchanges.

Connlaodh McCann was the man who led the come-back as he pointed a free in the 19th minute to close the gap to the minimum with the Gall’s defending desperately to hold onto that lead. McCann fired over the equaliser with four minutes remaining to set the scene for a grandstand finish.

St. Ergnat’s finished the stronger however with their opponents conceding frees and Connlaodh McCann punished those indiscretions as he pointed three in succession and added another from play to secure the Moneyglass side the title amidst scenes of celebration at the final whistle.
