Antrim girls beat Derry in close encounter

Antrim u15s played Derry u16s in the round robin phase of the Ulster u16 “A” grade competition in Sarsfields Ballerin on Sunday afternoon.
Both teams had met previously in a ‘grading game’ to decide whether the Antrim u15 team should compete in the ‘A’ or ‘B’ grade competitions.

Derry were victors in that match in Portglenone in a highly entertaining game – Derry pulling away with 4 goals in the last 10 mins. It was decided that Antrim’s u15 panel were strong enough and should indeed compete in the ‘A’ competition.

Yesterday this decision was fully justified when Antrim defeated Derry in a very competitive game. Goals from Orla McAllister, Janey McIntosh and Shannagh Heggarty keeping Antrim noses in front at the half time break – score was 1-7 to 3-8.
The second half continued the same as the first with score for score but it was Antrim who were able to bag the deciding goals (a brace from Orla McAlister) to leave the full time score as 3:10 to 5:14.
A great win for the young saffrons. Both teams were missing regulars on the day – the next encounter could go either way.

This is the round robin section of the competition with Antrim 15s, Antrim 16s and Derry 16s playing each other with the top team securing a final spot and the other 2 competing in a semi.
