OB Construction Intermediate Football Championship round robin
Tir na nÓg 4-21 Ardoyne 1-8
Tir na nÓg Randalstown booked their place in the semi-final of the Intermediate Football Championship when they beat visitors Ardoyne in the last game of the round-robin series at Whitehill on Sunday, and now face Sarsfields in Sunday week’s semi-final.
Going into the game Tir na nÓg knew that an 11 point win would put them through, regardless of the result in the other game between All Saints and Glenravel, but as it turned out they would have been safe regardless, given the Con Magees defeat to Ballymena. As it turned out they won the game with a bit to spare as they dominated from start to finish against and Ardoyne side who had really nothing to gain overall.
After an early exchange of points between Tir na nÓg’s Daniel Martin and Ardoyne Aidan McNeill the home side began to open a gap as Brendan Mclarnon, barry McCormick, Aaron McNeilly and Kevin Kerr all popped over points to open a 0-5 to 0-1 gap. Finton Marley and Aidan McNeill pulled a couple back for the visitors but Tir na nÓg pushed on again and a goal from full forward Kevin ‘Skimper’ Sheerin before the break helped them to a 1-10 to 0-5 half time lead.
After the change of ends the home side went further ahead as Caoimhin Duffin, Ciaran O’Neill and Colum Duffin added points apiece to stretch the lead to eleven. Conor McLaughlin and Daniel Moore pulled a couple back for Ardoyne, but a great solo effort from Ryan O’Neill had the Whitehill men 2-14 to 0-7 clear at the second water break.
The final quarter saw the gap grow larger by the minute as Tir na nÓg went for the jugular, hitting 2-7 in that period, the goal coming from Kevin Sheerin, who completed his hat-trick, and centre-half back Barry McCormick who capped a fine individual performance with a well taken goal. To their credit Ardoyne kept plugging away and left half back Finton Marley was rewards with a goal near the end, but the day was all about League Champions Tir na nÓg who have their sights firmly fixed on the double.
