St Killian’s power their way to final

Liatroim Fontenoys’ Cup semi-finals

St Killian’s Garron Tower 3-18 St Patrick’s Keady 1-5

St Pius X Magherafelt 2-14 St Conor’s Kilrea/Clady 4-6

St Killian’s Garron Tower completed a good week for the camogie team by qualifying for the final of the Liatroim Fontenoys’ Cup with this victory over St Patrick’s Keady in Castledawson where earlier in the week they had captured the Ulster Sevens title for the first time.

They imposed themselves on the game from the start and their point taking throughout was impressive with six from Orlaith McAlister helping them to a 1-10 to 0-0 interval lead. The centre-forward had recorded three before the water break when she switched places with midfielder Cara O’Boyle.

The opening goal came from Orlaith McCurry shortly after the water break and McAlister and O’Boyle scores pushed the boat out on Keady who had tried to curtail the one-way traffic by bringing centre forward Ciara Corr back as a sweeper. However that move left no way through at the other end for the south Armagh side with Eimhear McMullan, Abi McNeill and Aisling Mulholland dominant.

After the break Rhianna Black put the result to bed with a quick goal and, although Ciara Corr responded with a fine goal for Keady, Ellie Jo Butler fired low into the corner for a third goal for St Killian’s.

In fairness to the Armagh girls, they hit back with four points in a row. However St Killian’s still led by 3-14 to 1-4 at the second water break and pushed on with further points from Abi McNeill, Cara O’Boyle, Orlaith McCurry and Orlaith McAlister for a comprehensive victory.

In the earlier game in Magherafelt, Ellie McAfee almost snatched extra time for St Conor’s but her shot from 20 metres out just cleared the St Pius X cross bar and time ran out on the east Derry school.

There was very little between the teams throughout although St Pius X were generally ahead of their neighbours. Goals from Anna Mulholland and Emily Harris edged them in front by 2-4 to 1-4 at the break, with McAfee the goal-scorer for St Conor’s.

During the second half, St Pius just managed to stay ahead with a series of points from Paige Bell, Caitlin Crozier, Mulholland and Harris while Leah Cassidy found the net twice for St Conor’s and Eabha McMullan then closed the gap to a goal.

However the Magherafelt school held out for victory and a place in next week’s final.
