Lámhs clinch first ever minor silverware

Antrim LGFA Minor B Football Final

Lámh Dhearg 6-08-3-06 Con Magee’s Glenravel

Kevin Herron reports from Creggan

Lámh Dhearg minor ladies’ footballers made history when they clinched their first silverware in the first year of competing at minor code with a 6-08-3-06 win over Con Magee’s Glenravel in the B decider at Creggan this afternoon.

The Hannahstown ladies started on the front foot with Anna Mulholland and Robyn Murray claiming early points before Murray went on a solo run and was rewarded with a goal that gave her side a 1-02-0-00 lead.

Con Magee’s responded instantly through a magnificent strike from Clodagh McPeake and gained momentum.

McPeake landed three successive frees to nudge her side a point in front, but Robyn Murray hit back with her second point of the afternoon and Aoibheann Larkin slotted over before the break to ensure their side held a slender 1-04-1-03 lead at the interval.

The Lámhs extended their lead thanks to a converted Anna Mulholland free and then caught Con Magee’s cold when the referee awarded a free and Aoibheann Larkin struck it quickly to the net to move the Hannahstown ladies 2-05-1-03 up.

Things got better when Racheal Mulholland palmed home a third goal a few minutes ladies and Lauren Smyth curled over a fine point.

A fourth goal arrived approaching the midway point in the half when Racheal Mulholland floated in a dangerous cross and Maddie Donnelly reacted quickest to stab home at the near post.

Anna Mulholland then conjured a magnificent point from range to make it 3-03 without reply, though Con Magee’s pulled a goal back through a scrambled Caitlin McKeown effort.

Lámh Dhearg were still in the driving seat and Robyn Murray claimed her second goal of the game after her converted free sailed into the roof of the net, Anna Mulholland then clipped over a point a few minutes later.

With little under ten minutes remaining and double figures between the sides Con Magee’s could have been forgiven for going through the motions in the remaining minutes, but they battled on.

Aisling Donnelly landed a terrific point and Clodagh McPeake rifled home her second of the game and converted her fourth of the contest to reduce the deficit to single figures.

A sixth goal for Lámh Dhearg firmly killed off the Glenravel challenge when Anna Mulholland fired to the net.

McPeake floated over a point in reply but in the end it was a youthful Lámh Dhearg’s day as they claimed their first ever minor honours – in their first year of having a ladies minor team.

It was a real team effort with a youthful squad made up with a mix of U-14, U-16 and minor girls that will be hungry for more success in the future.
