Antrim Intermediate Camogie Championship final
Loughgiel Shamrocks 2-11 O’Donovan Rossa 1-8
An injury time goal from Charley McCarry sealed the Intermediate Camogie title for Loughgiel at the excellent Davitt Park on Saturday against a gallant Rossa team who lost out in the final for the second year running.
The Shamrocks had led for most of the game, but when Rossa came with a late run to draw level going into injury time they must have felt they were in with a great chance, but Loughgiel never panicked and they pushed on to victory with a strong finish to complete the Senior and Intermediate double for the club.
The Shamrocks went ahead early in the game when Kirsty McKendry pointed them ahead on three with a well taken score from play, but
Rossa were soon level as Orlagh McCall converted a 45. Rossa were enjoying good possession in those early stages but could not put the scores on the board and Loughgiel retook the lead with a point from Ciara Connolly. Connolly then laid on a score for Louise McKillop and former Ulster Championship winning senior captain Una McNaughton stretched the gap to three with a point from play.
Rossa were in need of a lift and it came seven minutes before the break when Carragh Shannon and Natalie McGuinness combined to send Sarah Armstrong through to set up Riona Matthews who kicked the ball to the back of the Loughgiel net.
Rossa’s tails were up at this stage but Loughgiel responded right away and Orlagh Laverty won possession to the right of the Rossa goal before firing home.
Rossa battled hard and were rewarded when Mairead Rainey pointed, but Loughgiel still held the upper hand and at the break they led 1-4 to 1-2.
Loughgiel increased their lead with a an Orlagh Laverty point early in the second half, and while Rossa closed to within two again with a Orlagh McCall point, Ciara Dobbin and Meghan McGarry came back with points for the Shamrocks to stretch their lead to four
Rossa kept themselves in contention with points from Bronagh Orchin and Natalie McGuinness to cut the gap to just one point, but Kirsty McKendry pointed for the winners to put them two clear at the second half water break. However Rossa would not go away and when Bronagh Orchin and Orlagh McCall sent over points they were back on terms by the 53rd minute.
Hard as they tried though the Shaw’s Road girls could not get their noses in front, and when the challenge was put up to them, Loughgiel responded well. Orlagh Laverty pointed to put them back ahead and when Player of the Match Katie McKillop added a beauty from distance they were two clear. Minutes later the victory was all but sealed when substitute Charley McCarry grabbed a high delivery to fire home but Rossa made one last bid to save the game but Orlagh McCall’s rasping shot was turned over for a point and the Shamrocks were champions yet again.
