Stewart second half double puts the icing on an excellent Moneyglass win

LGFA Minor A Football Championship final

Moneyglass 4-15 St. Brigid’s 2-6

Two second half goals from Leah Stewart finally killed off the challenge of St. Brigid’s in this highly entertaining Minor A football final at Glenravel on Sunday. St. Ergnat’s led 2-9 to 1-3 in a first half where they were always in control but St. Brigid’s gave themselves a lifeline when Cliodhna Logan fired to the Moneyglass net five minutes into the second half.

Those hopes were quickly dashed as St. Ergnat’s came back strongly with a flurry of points and when Stewart struck with the first of her two goals in the 43d minute it was all over.

The reigning Minor champions got off to a great start with a goal from Hannah Murray in the second minute and points from Maria O’Neill, Leah Cassidy, Ciara Scullin and Alica Boyd had them seven ahead before Caitlin Courtney opened St. Brigid’s account with a goal in the 12th minute.

Maria O’Neill for Moneyglass and Mary Mitchell for the Musgrave Park girls traded points and Ciara O’Boyle and Nicole Cassidy for the champions and Hannah Dinghy for Naomh Brid swapped further score to leave Moneyglass  five in front with 26 minutes gone.

The South West side upped the ante during the closing stages of the half however as they added 1-2 with Maria O’Neill pointing in the 28th and 29th minute before Nicole Cassidy fired to the net in the 30th minute with Naomh Brid’s solitary reply coming from a Theresa Mellon point in injury time.

Caitlin Courtney fired to the Moneyglass net, five minutes into the second half to give her side a glimmer of hope but it brought a strong response from their opponents as Ciara O’Boyle replied with a couple of points before Leah Stewart rattled the St. Brigid’s net and even at this stage it looked a long way back for the South Belfast girls.

They continued to battle however against the odds but were finding the Moneyglass defence an immovable object and could only manage a further two points through Cliodhna Logan and the impressive Caitlin Courtney.

Moneyglass turned on the burners in the run in to the final whistle as the opposition defence finally wilted under the increasing pressure and points from Annie Griffin, Ciara O’Boyle, Maria McNally and Sarah O’Neill straddled Leah Stewart’s second goal to leave the Blue & Gold’s convincing winners in the end.
