Con Magees swept aside like the Spring snow

Antrim Football League Div 2

Glenravel 0-06  Moneyglass 2-11

The sun shone throughout this game but a blizzard about thirty minutes before throw in carpeted one quarter of the pitch in fresh white snow; this was the part the evening sun couldn’t reach as it lowered itself to bed of a late March evening. From Glenravel’s point of view the white snowflakes were replaced by blue jerseys of the opposition as they swept the home team aside, especially in the second quarter of the game.

Both sides were guilty of wayward shooting and missed chances in the opening exchanges when in fact the home team dominated possession. However Moneyglass were first off the mark with a goal from big full forward Dermot McErlaine when he rifled low past the hapless Jude Scullion in goals with almost ten minutes of the game gone. Four minutes later Eoin Hynds pointed a free to reduce the gap to two but that was to be the home team’s only score of the half as Moneyglass went into overdrive and recorded 1-06 without reply in a fifteen minute spell. Connor O’Kane would admit to being a tad fortunate with the goal but his colleagues Colm Duffin (0-02, 1f) and Conaill Prenter (0-03) looked super confident as they rattled over six points, all but one coming from open play.  Moneyglass retired to the changing rooms at half time with a commanding lead 2-06 to 0-01.

Con Magees made a couple of personnel and positional switches at the break and did manage to steady the ship a little in the second half.  David Higgins moved from an lar to full forward and put over a nice score form play in the opening minute. The visitors followed up with a couple of points from Conaill Prenter and Patrick McCormick to leave them ahead 2-08 to 0-02 and only twenty minutes left. Both teams would continue to trade points to the end of the game; Moneyglass’s scores came from Seanchann Duffin, Dermot McErlaine and Colum Duffin, whilst Aiden O’Donnell, Declan Traynor and Eoin Hynds (0-02) replied for the home team. As the evening gloom drew in the referee called proceedings to a halt and declared Moneyglass victors on a 2-11 to 0-06 scoreline. Mathematically the second half honours were shared but Moneyglass had done too much damage in the first to ever be caught.

They remain unbeaten in Division 2 after three games. They will host newly promoted Rasharkin next Sunday whilst Glenravel head to the airport to take on Aldergrove.
