Davitt’s hold on for the win in the Bear Pit

Antrim Football League Division 2

Sarsfields 0-6 Davitt’s 0-8

Davitt’s good run under manager Sean McKenna continued at Wednesday evening at the Bear Pit when they beat Sarsfield by 0-8 to 0-6. In a low scoring, but intense contest Davitt’s always had the edge, but Sarfields paid for their wastefulness when scoring chances were on.

Davitt’s missed a series of chances in the opening minutes but eventually got on the scoresheet on eight minutes when midfielder Caomhan Slane fired over. Corner forward Marcas Toney, who was one of Davitt’s stars on the night, got their second point and five minutes later Christopher Rafferty got their third score of the game

Sarsfields finally got going on 20 minutes when centre forward Gary Lennon fired over and this signalled the start of their best spell of the game as Tomas Skillen and Conor Glenholmes added points to bring them back level with just five minutes of the first half still to play.

Davitt’s reacted well when challenged, and after goalkeeper Aaron Slane came up to point a 40 meter free Padraig McParland added two  more to send them in at the break leading by 0-6 to 0-3.

Two more from Marcas Toner at the start of the second half stretched Davitt’s advantage to five and they looked to have it all wrapped up, but a Garry Lenon point midway through the half got the Paddies going again. Philip McPeake fired over to cut the deficit to just three and late in the game substitute Brian Healey sent over to leave just two between the sides, but though the home team had a series of chances to close the gap even further, that is as close as they got and Davitt’s held on for the win.
