Moneyglass 1-8 Cargin 4-4

The introduction of, Conhuir Johnston swung this local Minor Football derby Cargin’s way when they travelled the short distance to Marian Hill to meet St. Ergnat’s Moneyglass.

There has been a lot of good work done in recent years with the Moneyglass juvenile setup and the scalp of its near neighbours would have been a welcome one for the home side.

It all looked to be going to plan during the opening half where a lively St. Ergnat’s called the shots as they raced into a 0-5 to 0-1 halftime lead and were full value for that lead.

Jamie McLaughlin opened the scoring for the home side with a point in the 3d minute and made it 0-2 to 0-2with another point with four minutes gone. Paul Duffin made it 3-0 as he split the posts in the 6th minute and it was a further seven minutes before Patrick O’Neill got Cargin’s only point of the opening half.

Cargin performed major surgery at half time when they sent MacRory Cup star, Conhuir Johnston into the action for the second half and it made an immediate and telling difference. The St. Mary’s Grammar School star has been out of action with a lengthy injury but had an immediate impact on the men around him.

Diarmuid Quinn began the comeback with a goal in the second minute but Moneyglass replied with points from Damien Duffin and Sean Boyd to move three ahead again with five minutes of the new half gone.

Conhuir Johnston made his first major contribution to proceedings when he fired home Cargin’s second goal with 41 minutes on the clock but Callum Murray edged the St. Ergnat’s ahead once more when he pointed in the 43d minute.

Things were certainly warming up as Carl McCann tied the contest once more and Conhuir Johnston levelled the contest once more with a point in the 25th minute. It still looked anyone’s game as Sean Boyd replied with a point for the Marian Hill side   and a draw looked like the possible outcome.

Cometh the hour cometh the man and Conhuir Johnston took the game by the scruff of its neck in the closing minutes as he fired home his second goal and followed with a point to win it for the Toome side.
