Monday 2nd May 2022, St Galls Annual May Day tournament returned to Milltown for the first time since 2019 due to Covid restrictions. Featuring 23 teams from across the island, including local sides St Pauls, St Johns, St Endas, Lamh Dhearg, Rossa, Davitts, Sarsfields, St Brigids, Bredagh, Kickhams Creggan, Cookstown Fr Rocks, Whitehall Colmcille, Fingallions and two teams from St Galls, it was sure to be a fantastic day of football and it didn’t disappoint.
Thankfully the weather took a last-minute change and the rain stayed away, while the pitches were a sea of colour and happy smiling faces from both the children and spectators! Congratulations to St Johns who took home both the Cup and the Plate on the day, while Whitehall Colmcille won the Shield.
This tournament provides the opportunity for young players to get experience of playing against a mixture of older and/or more experienced teams, with every game being played in the right spirit and ethos. It was great to see so many travelling teams and their supporters come along to enjoy a fantastic day of sport, make new friends and unforgettable moments with their team mates and families.
Organising the tournament is a huge undertaking for St Galls, but its thanks to their army of organisers, volunteers and sponsors that days like this can happen. A massive thanks to all the stewards, pitch crew, shop and support crew, bbq team, first aid team and our Hen Shed who made up all the packed lunches on the day. Thank you to our sponsors, Irwins Bakery, Fyffes, J&C Frozen Foods, Prime Deli & Davy McGrath for helping make the whole things possible
