On the 15th of May 2020 the Agnew family, Lámh Dhearg CLG, the Hannahstown Community and local gaels were shocked and stunned at the news of the sudden death of Gary Agnew affectionately known as “Garso”. Gary was an absolute gentleman and a very talented, popular and successful gael.
Gary enjoyed a very successful GAA career with Lámh Dhearg and the county
- “Garso’ captained Lámh Dhearg Minors to their historic hurling championship in 1992
- Won MFC and U21 FC in 1992
- Won IHC and Division 2 League Titles
- Represented Antrim at Under 14 – U21
Unfortunately Covid prevented the family and club from organising a night in the club in memory of Gary. Thankfully with the easing of Covid and the restrictions, Gary’s partner Maureen and a sub committee from the club now have the opportunity to do so. They have enthusiastically organised a night in the Lámh Dhearg Clubrooms on Saturday 28th May to positively celebrate the life of Gary.
Before the function there will be a Hurling Match challenge between a Lámh Dhearg Select and the Belfast Half Pace hurlers. The game might not have the pace, skill and intensity of a typical Waterford v Limerick game yet it will reflect Gary’s passion for hurling. Many of Gary’s teammates from the ’92 minor and IHC teams are intending to take the boots down from the nails in the garage and dust the cobwebs from their Cooper helmets and give it a lash in memory of their esteemed and respected teammate. The club can also organise hurls and helmets if anyone needs them.
The club are also keen to welcome players who played with Gary at school, county or against Gary to come along and play . Players keen to play , please contact Daryl Fegan 07989 301662 as there is no doubt plenty of subs will be needed on both sides and everyone will undoubtedly get adequate game time in a game of leisurely paced hurling.
After the game both teams will retire to the clubrooms and join Maureen, Gary’s family and many club members and local gaels for a night’s entertainment including a disco to contribute to a poignant and fitting tribute to Gary.
Tickets are £10 and along with the proceeds of a ballot will be donated to the worthy charity Suicide Awarenss and Support Group, Falls Road.
