Second half goals see Glenariffe/Glenravel through

Under 15 Hurling League

Glenariffe/Glenravel 2-9 St Enda’s 1-7

Second half goals from Colla Ward and Sean Og O’Neill gave Glenariffe/Glenravel a hard fought win over St Enda’s in Tuesday evening’s Under 15 Hurling League game in Glenariffe.  The teams were level after at half time but in a low scoring second half the goals by Ward and O’Neill gave the home team the edge.

In wet and cold conditions Glenariffe/Glenravel were on top in the early stages of the game and two points from Joe McKay, and one each from Canice McIntosh and Cahir McNaughton had them 0-4 to 0-1 ahead by the end of the opening quarter, the St Enda’s point coming from their excellent midfielder Frank Kane.

The Glengormley boys picked up the pace in the second quarter with points from Odhrán Matthews and Frank Kane. A goal on 26 minutes by Shea Bell put the visitors in front and it took a pointed free from Joe McKay to bring the home team level at the break. (0-7 to 1-4)

The opening ten minutes of the second half produced plenty of effort from both sides, but no scores, until Kane ended the deadlock with a well taken point to put St Enda’s in front. Two minutes later Glenariffe/Glenravel’s centre back soloed through from his own half and shot low to the St Enda’s net to put his team two ahead, and Cahir McNaughton moved them a goal clear when he pointed three minutes later.

Another top class point from Frank Kane brought St Enda’s back to within two, but another strong run from Colla Ward saw his fire across the goal where substitute Sean Og O’Neill drilled a ground shot to the net to put five between the teams. Oisin Magee who  had moved from goalkeeper to corner forward at half time for St Enda’s pulled a point back and came close to grabbing a goal, only to be denied by an excellent save by Padraig McIlhatton in the Glenariffe/Glenravel goals. McIlhatton was called upon again the dying minutes of the game to keep his goal intact and the home team held on for the win.
