St Brigid’s beat Glenravel to stay top

Antrim Under 15 Football League – Division 1

Con Magees 2-6 St Brigid’s 4-11

Under 15 Division 1 League leaders St Brigid’s came from behind at half time to beat Con Magee, Glenravel in Thursday evening’s game at Fr Maginn Park. Two first half goals helped the home side to a one point lead at the break (2-3 to 0-8), but two goals inside a minute at the start of the second half turned the game firmly in St Brigid’s favour and they went on to win by eleven in the end.

A brilliant point from distance in the opening minute from Glenravel midfielder Dairi Higgins got the home side off to a great start and things got even better soon afterward when a free from Higgins went into the net off the underside of the crossbar to put his team four clear.

St Brigid’s Danny Kelly slots the ball past Glenravel goalkeeper Feargal McKay for the second of his two goals.

St Brigid’s began to settle into the game and two excellent points from right half forward Conor McCavanna cut the deficit in half before centre forward James Higgins cut the gap to the minimum.

Points from Peter Molly and Donnacha McGurk put the South Befast side ahead, but a scrambled goal, which was finished to the net by Thomas McLaughlin, put Glenravel back ahead. Thomas McLaughlin added a point to put his team two clear but a Joseph Logan point for the visitors just before the break left them trailing by just one at half time.

St Brigid’s made a blistering start to the second half with two goals inside a minute from Danny Kelly and Luke Logan, the latter having an element of luck about it as Logue’s well struck shot deflected off a defender on its way to the net. This double strike was a real body blow to the home side and they struggled to find their feet for a while. St Brigid’s pushed on to add some lovely points through Rhys Bray and Joseph Logan and another goal from Danny Kelly who finished to the left corner with aplomb.

Thomas McLaughin (3rd from left) turs away in celebration after scoring Glenravel’s second goal.

Sean Og O’Neill and Harry Fyfe got Glenravel back on the scoreboard and they were denied a goal by a brilliant save by St Brigid’s goalkeeper Jonah Power, but the league leaders were now in command and McCavanna and Conor Friel added to the scoreboard before the end. The Musgrave Park side now lead the table by five points, but their nearest rivals St Paul’s have two games in hand, and it promises to be another great race between these to two great rivals
