Casements 1-16 Rossa 1-6
Roger Casements gained revenge for defeat against the same opposition in Belfast a few weeks ago with a ten point victory over a weakened Rossa at Kelly Park on Wednesday night.
The home side started brightly and raced into a 5-1 lead after 15 minutes. Oisín Doherty, who was lively throughout, opened the scoring after 3 minutes before Rossa full forward Colm Fleming replied with a pointed free.
Casements began to take charge as the half moved on with Michael Hagan, Paddy Kelly (0-2) and Ryan Convery all getting on the score sheet. A long range Stephen Beatty point from play proved to be the last Rossa score of the half.
The home side finished the half strongly with points from Doherty, Dermot McAleese and Hagan, followed by two from centre forward Aidan McAleese. That left the score at half time Casements 0-9 Rossa 0-2
Rossa started the second half with some intent, getting the first 2 scores of the half. However, Casements responded when a flowing move through the Rossa defence resulted in Ruairí Hagan being fouled in the area. Older brother Michael stepped up and made no mistake from the penalty spot to make it a 8 point game with ten minutes of the second half gone.
Casements added further points through Ruairí Hagan, Aidan McAleese and Kelly to take full control of the game. Rossa managed to find the back of the net when a high delivery into the square wasn’t dealt with by the Casements defence and the ball was forced home.
However, it had little effect on the remainder of the game with Casements able to use their full quota of subs and both teams adding to their points total to leave the full time score Casements 1-16 Rossa 1-6
