New York no match for high scoring Saffrons

TG4 LGFA All-Ireland Junior Football Championship, Group B

Antrim 7-19 New York 0-8

Antrim Ladies hit 7 goals at Pairc Davitt on Sunday as they blew away their New York opponents to book their place in the All Ireland Junior Championship semi- final. Brilliantly marshalled by player of the match Orlaith Prenter the Saffrons were in charge from the start, and despite playing into a strong breeze, were 12 points to the good by half time.

Such was the strength of the wind that 12 point lead didn’t look entirely comfortable, but it was clear soon after the change of ends just who was in charge and they soon dispelled any fears they had of a New York comeback.

Orlaith Prenter was first to register for the Saffrons and following a point from play she was set up by St Ergnet’s team mate Cathy Carey for the first goal of the game. Further scores followed by Prenter and Aine Turbidy as they pulled away, Prenter pointing again before Marie O’Neill fired in goal number two. The exiles came back with points two points from Clarke and one from Brady but Antrim were inn charge, and despite firing a penalty over the bar they still lead by 2-10 to 0-4 by half time.

Antrim stretched their lead with a Laura Dahunsi point, which was followed soon afterwards by a Devlin goal. The highly dangerous Marie O’Neill got in for goal number four

New York’s first score of the new half came from Lauren Rodican but lack of discipline was costing the exiles dearly, and they lost Megan Fitzpatrick to the sin-bin, their third yellow card of the half.

Kelly Brady swung over a point for New York with Aoife Taggart responding, but the visitors kept plugging away and were rewarded with two fine points from play by Brady and then Rodican, Antrim were not to be outdone however and their superiority showed on the pitch, and on the scoreboard, as they romped to a comprehensive victory.
