Cargin retain top spot with Milltown win

A C U17 Football League (Division One)

St Gall’s 3-04 Erin’s Own Cargin 5-14

A smart getaway and a dominant opening period ensured Cargin maintained the winning habit as they faced St. Gall’s at Milltown on Sunday.

The visitors opened strongly and an early goal from Patrick O’ Neill set them on their way and further goals from Diarmuid Quinn, Ciaran Mc Peake, and the impressive Callum Gribbin ensured a more than healthy 4-06 to 0-01 lead at the interval break.

The Toome men dominated in most areas in that first period and looked on the way to victory but although such was to be the path to be taken the road ahead was not to be an easy passage

St Gall’s were quickly off the mark in the second half with an early score as Sean Kelly saw his effort come off the crossbar with Chris Hale nipping in to claim the rebound and return between the posts.

Cargin replied and Diarmuid Quinn fetched a Patrick Matchyk clearance to send Callum Gribbin away to find the net the visitors seemed back in control.

In the event St. Gall’s began to get on top as Sean Kelly advanced from the left wing following a Shea Mc Adam’s clearance to despatch firmly to the back of the net.

The 36th minute major added impetus to the St Gall’s cause as the hard working Mc Adams came forward to grab a stylish 39th minute goal but Callum Gribbin relied at the other end with a 40th minute point.

The resultant kick out opened the way for Dualtach Crawford to add another goal in the Gall’s cause and the home side looked in business.

The wheels seemed to have come off the Cargin wagon but a well organised counter attack and a Diarmuid Quinn point was to signal recovery in the ranks of the green and white.

The big full forward came wide to add another from away out on the left and when Callum Gribbin added a fine 4th minute point the tide had turned again and the Toome lads were back in business.

The home side answered in kind at the other end but when Cargin central defender Ciaran Mc Peake completed a strong solo run with a 52nd minute point the game was as good as over.

Cargin maintain the pressure in the latter stages and points from Cahir O’ Boyle in the 57th and 59th minutes ensured the points were secured as they crossed the winning line with a 5-13 to 3-04 winning advantage.

This win sees Cargin maintain top spot with 18 points from 10 starts, two above St. Brigid’s with St. Paul’s sitting in third place on 12 points but with two games in hand.
