Erin’s Own Cargin 1-08 O’ Donavan Rossa 1-05
A Pat Shivers goal in the 42nd minute proved the difference as Cargin completed their league programme on a winning note with a win over the visiting Rossa on Saturday evening.
The full forward who left the contest shortly after following a second booking was first to react as Michael Byrne the Rossa net minder, who had made several excellent saves previously, stood tall again to deny Ciaran Bradley.
Although the home side finished with 13 men as they lost a man to a red card shortly after with the visitors coming within a couple of points of their hosts in the latter stages. Colm Fleming clipped a close range free between the posts but a 59th minute Sean Og O’ Neill point for the home side was to prove sufficient.
The opening period of this one was to prove a forgettable affair as Rossa defended in numbers and the home side found positive penetration difficult in the extreme.
James Laverty placed Sean Og O’ Neill to open account with a 3rd minute point with Michael Byrne coming forward to send a ‘45’ directly between the posts a few minutes later but the scoreboard attendant was given little further employment in the opening period.
Both the home side and their hosts were to struggle in the finishing department as the wide ball tally continued to mount but Tom Shivers looked certain to find the net but was denied as Michael Byrne advanced off his line to smother the shot at the expense of a 45 in the 22nd minute.
John Mc Nabb had no problem in despatching the award between the posts and a late Jamie Gribbin point ensured a less than impressive 0-03 to 0-01 advantage at the end of a disappointing opening period.
Rossa made a bright start to the second half and they had drawn level in a matter of a few minutes.
Long striding mid fielder Pearce Shortt left several in his wake as a strong approach opened the way for a 32nd minute point, and when corner man Conall Mc Donnell followed suit a minute later, Rossa were on terms at 0-03 apiece.
Back to back points from the home side’s Jamie Gribbin and Ciaran Bradley ensured advantage for the Toome men but play swung to the other end as a lofted delivery from Eoghan Mc Menamin opened the way for Conall Mc Donnell to fire to the back of the net to put the visitors 1-03 to 0-05 ahead.
A quick reply from Cargin saw Pat Shivers punish a foul on Gerard McCorley to send the resultant award between the posts to ensure parity on the scoreboard.
The game had livened up considerably as Cargin attacked again and Ciaran Bradley was denied a goal when Michael Byrne made another fine save but Pat Shivers was quick to grab the rebound and return post haste to the back of the net.
Rossa net minder, Michael Byrne then made another excellent save to deny Benen Kelly and his clearance found Adam Devlin who advanced to split the posts at the other end.
Pat Shivers replied with a point for the Toome side before leaving the stage and the home side were soon reduced further in number when John Carron was sent for an early shower.
Rossa pushed hard to close the gap as Colm Fleming despatched a close free kick between the posts and only a couple of points separated the sides as the clock ticked onwards towards the sixty minute mark.
That was as close as the visitors got as the home side stood strong in defiance and they were to have the last say as Sean Og O’Neill strode forward to fire between the posts and ensure a 1-08 to 1-05 win for the Cargin men.
This win leaves Cargin at the top of the table but it could be short lived as Creggan travel up to Hannahstown on Monday evening safe in the knowledge that a win will ensure the Eddie Fitzsimmons Memorial trophy will return to the Staffordstown Road for another year.
