Cargin clinch Minor League title with local derby success

ACMFL Division One

Erin’s Own Cargin 5-13 St Ergnat’s Moneyglass 1-10

Cargin secured the minor (U17) league title with a local derby win over close rivals, and near neighbours Moneyglass in an a fully contested hard fought contest at the Toome on Tuesday evening.

At a first glance the finishing score line would suggest an easy win for the home side but in the event the St Ergnat’s lads gave as good as they got for much of the contest and it was only in a dominant last quarter that the hosts pulled away.

The Toome side held a slender 1-10 to 1-09 lead at the end of the opening quarter but when replacement Fiontan Hardy found the net shortly after being introduced it proved the turning point.

Callum Gribbin, Fiontan Hardy, and Patrick O’ Neill all found the net in turn in the latter stages and ensured a hard earned derby success and the division one league title.

Conhuir Johnston got Cargin off to a positive start with a 2nd minute point with Callum Gribbin quick to follow suit.

Sean Boyd opened the visitors acount when he raised a 7th minute white flag and although Callum Gribbin extended the home sides lead when he split the posts the visitors were quick to reply through Callum Graham.

Cargin maintained their advantage at the end of the opening quarter but they had been denied a couple of goal chances by such juncture with Moneyglass net minder Rory Neeson standing tall to deny Ryan O’ Neill before seeing a  Callum Gribbin effort sail just past his post.

Cargin held advantage in the vital central Zone through Charlie Mc Cann and Cian Scullion but St. Ergnat’s Tiernan Mc Cormick was causing panic every time he gained possession with his strong runs through the middle.

Cargin began to open up a gap as the opening half progressed with a fine goal as a Conhuir Johnston interception paved the way for an excellent finish by Carl McCann to ensure a four point lead.

The visitors were to have the final say of the opening half however and a 30th minute Tiernan Mc Cormick goal ensured only the minimum separated the sides at half time with the home side leading 1-06 to 1-05.

All to play for in the second half and the sides were level less than a minute into it when another Tiernan Duffin run set up Kevin McCann for a good finish to ensure parity.

Cargin found a response and precise finishing from Conhuir Johnston and Callum Gribbin saw them move three ahead and the home side looked to be taking control.

Moneyglass had other ideas however and back to back points from Jamie Mc Laughlin and Sean Boyd ensured only the minimum separated the sides at the end of the last quarter.

The result was still in question but the introduction of Fiontan Hardy saw the substitute find the net with virtually his first touch as he was sent through by Conhuir Johnston for what was to prove a game changer.

Cargin added a goal, a few minutes later as Carl Mc Cann opened the door for a stunning Callum Gribbin finish and when Patrick O’ Neill added another the end was nigh.

Despite giving their all and matching their neighbours for three quarters of the game the brave challenge offered by St Ergnat’s was all in vain as Cargin finished strongly and a dominant last quarter secured the minor league title for an excellent Erin’s Own.
