St Paul’s secure Division 2 Camogie title

St Paul’s 2-7 Cargin Gaels 1-5

St Paul’s Minor Camogs secured the Antrim Div 2 League title after defeating Cargin Gaels (Cargin, Ahoghill and Moneyglass) on Saturday in miserable conditions in St Endas.

St Pauls – Megan Millar, Meabh Martin, Sian Burke, Amy Murray, Dairine Philips, Gemma McGroarty, Enya Daye, Aoibheann Hand, Niamh Ritchie, Orleigha McGuiness, Cara Duncan, Saorlaith Brennan, Rebecca McConville, Aoife Curry, Maeve Devlin.

After suffering a large defeat to Cargin Gaels in the league St Paul’s were the underdogs going into the final. This was compounded when St Pauls were forced to start without 3 regulars due to injuries (Caomihe Bell, Nicole Munce and Maeve Devlin). Playing with the wind St Paul’s dominated the first half with Saorlaith Brennan, Cara Duncan, Orleigha McGuiness (fresh from starring with Northern Ireland U17 footballers), Niamh Ritchie and Rebecca McConville scoring points from play with Aoife Curry following up with a goal. Rosin Quinn was offering significant resistance in the Cargin defence and Orlaith Johnston fielding several balls at mid-field. Half-time 1:06 – 0:01

The introduction of Antrim U15 player Katie McCloskey spurred Cargin into action early in the second half. McCloskey scored 3 frees and a goal from play as Cargin narrowed the difference to one point. St Paul’s countered by introducing Antrim U16 player, Maeve Devlin (returning after an injury spell). Devlin scored St Paul’s first point of the second half and played the ball into Rebecca McConville who goaled. Thereafter St Paul’s defence held with Megan Millar clearing off her line several times. Despite the best efforts of McCloskey and Caoimhe Scullion in the Cargin attack there were no further scores with the game ending 2:07 – 1:05.
