A strong finish by Rathmore Grammar, which saw two great individual points from corner forward Fiontan O’Boyle, saw them book their place in the semi-final of the McLarnon Cup at the expense of Belfast neighbours Acquinas at Coláiste Feirste on Friday afternoon. Leading by three at half time Aquinas had drawn level with two points from Daniel Carlin and one from Brendan Delaney, but a great individual score from Fiontan O’Boyle gave Rathmore back the lead and O’Boyle added another before the end to seal that semi-final spot.
Aquinas were denied a goal early in the game by Rathmore keeper Sonny Doyle and Donncha McGurk gave Rathmore the lead soon afterward. It was nip and tuck during an exciting first half Rory McErlean picking off three points for Rathmore, in reply to two by Carlin and Duffy to give his team a 0-5 to 0-2 lead the break.
It looked to be anyone’s game when Aquinas fought back to draw level, but a bit of individual brilliance by O’Boyle got Rathmore home in the end.
