Very National Camogie League – Division 1B
Antrim 1-7 Waterford 0-15
Antrim camogs slipped to their first defeat of the season when they lost out to a very good Waterford team at Creggan on Saturday. The visitors had just too much power for Antrim which means that the Saffrons need to win their last game against Wexford in 2 weeks’ time if they are to set up a second clash with Waterford in the league final.
Antrim were first to score when Caitrin Dobbin pointed inside twenty seconds, but the visitors hit back through All Star Beth Carlton who send over four points, one of them from a free. Dobbin scored her second point in the 12th minute but the visitors pushed and dominated the rest of the opening half to lead by o-8 to 0-2 after 20 minutes. Antrim did manage to pull a couple back but the girls from the Diesa were in control and went on to lead by o-10 to 0-4 at the half-time whistle.
Dobbin got Antrim back in contention early in the second half as she added a couple more points but the Saffrons were still six in arrears
at the end and of the third quarter The home team got a boost when a shot for a point dipped under the Waterford crossbar and suddenly it was game on again to close the gap to 3. Suddenly there was new hope for Antrim, but the Waterford girls were able to respond and hit back with the last two points to keep their 100% record intact and secure place in the league final.
Antrim’s chances of making that final are hanging by a thread, but if they can beat Wexford at home in their final game in a fortnight’s time they can still make it through to that final.
