McAteer clan to the fore as Creggan take the points

ACFL Div. 1

Kickham’s Creggan 0-13 Tir na nOg 2-3

On an atrocious night for football this local derby didn’t exactly have those in attendance on the edge of their seats. An under strength Kickham’s started the scoring with a well taken Paddy Coey point against a strong wind but Tir na nOg responded well in the 7th minute as Darragh Fagan fielded a high ball into the edge of the square and turned sharply to kick to the net.

Dominic McAteer and Tiernan McAteer replied with points in the 12th & 13th minute to level the contest and Tiernan followed with a fine point in the 14th minute before Diarmuid Mulholland scored his first point of the evening as the Kickham’s hit the front.

The lively Aaron McNeilly hit Tir na nOg’s last point of the half on 22minutes but the final score of the half fell to Dominic McAteer who fired over an excellent effort with four minutes remaining to the break to leave his side two ahead at the short whistle.

Half Time:   Kickhams 0-06 to Tir na nOg 1-01

Creggan started the second half with the wind at their backs and Diarmuid Mulholland hit a fantastic point with the outside of the boot in the first minute to extend their lead to three.

The McAteer brothers then took control of the game with Joe and Jake feeding their two brothers Tiernan and Dominic who hit 4 unanswered points between them by the 9th minute to put more distance between the sides.

Once again it was Aaron McNeilly who led the Tir na nOg response as he fired over points in the 14th and 21st minute. It was to no avail however as Kickham’s replied through Kevin Small and Lee Johnston and  Darragh Fagan’s second goal of the game in the 29th minute came too late to affect the result with the home side running out winners by four points.
