Goals are the key to success for St Enda’s

Minor Football League

Cargin 0-12 St Enda’s 3-11

Goals proved the key to success as St Enda’s gained a full return of the points from a trip down to Toome on Sunday last as the Hightown lads recorded a 3-12 to 0-10 victory over Cargin in the minor football league.

The visitors got off to a good start when Aiden Murphy fired to the back of the net in the 10th minute and as the home side missed a couple of goal chances in the early stages, St Enda’s proved good value for a 1-04 to 0-02 interval advantage.

Callum Gribbin and Michael Mc Kenna swapped points in the opening phase before a well-constructed counter attack saw Sean Nielan finish with a smart point to see his side earn early advantage.

The home side were finding the target elusive in the cross field breeze but the visitors were to benefit from a wayward delivery in the early stages as Aiden Murphy despatched to the back of the Cargin net.

The home side were struggling to gain a foothold in the opening quarter as the visitors, added back to back points via Aaron Mc Keown and Conan Walsh before mid-fielder Jack Harney raced through to add a point to Cargin’s tally.

A good score delivered in style but play soon returned to the other end and it took a good save from the home side’s net minder Daniel Mc Cann to deny the impressive Seaan Nielan just on the short whistle with St Enda’s taking respite at 1-04 to 0-02.

Having concluded the opening period on the offensive the Glengormley lads started to second with the same positivity and a 31st minute goal by centre forward Nielan extended their advantage.

Cargin tried to respond with Patrick O’ Neill and the hard grafting Callum Gribbin adding points apiece but these scores were negated when Nathan Mc Keown and Sean Nielan split the posts at the other end.

St Enda’s led 2-07 to 0-05 at the end of the third quarter and confidence reigned within the ranks.

Another point from the excellent Callum Gribbin following a foul on Cillian Scullion reduced the gap but the resultant kick out would see Nathan Mc Keown fetch in style before heading for the target and finishing in style to see the visitors move 3-08 to 0-07 ahead and the end in sight.

The home side, with Callum Gribbin leading the way fought to find a way back in the latter stages but the Hightown side with a firm grip on proceedings were in control and at the long blast they had crossed the winning line points secured at 3-11 to 0-12….
