Patrick Pearse – A Significant Irish Educationalist – A Lecture by Or Séamas O Donnghaile – This lecture discusses the Ireland that created Pearse and his philosophy of education in a free Ireland and how the ‘education’ system in Ireland sought to create an ‘unthinking people’. Séamas discusses elements of Pearse’s 1912 pamphlet “The Murder Machine’ – a caustic attack on the system of schooling designed by a dominant and foreign administration and offers examples of Pearse’s influence on people who pioneered immersion education in different parts of Ireland. The lecture is based on doctoral research Seamas completed in QUB in 2016: The Importance and Relevance of PH Pearse for Irish-medium Education in the 2lst Century – Leaders’ Perspectives.

Seamas is the current chair of Cumann Chluain Ard and the founding principal of Bunscoil Mic Reachtain, Belfast. The Lecture will be in English. A first edition of Pearse’s five volumes of works will be balloted on the night as a fundraiser for Naiscoil Mhic Reachtain. £10 per ticket.
