Aghagallon’s Ruairi edges the battle of the Ruairi’s

ACFL Division 1

Aghagallon 3-10 Creggan 0-13

Kickham’s Creggan travelled to Aghagallon on Wednesday night and in an entertaining game where both teams were short several of their starting 15 through injuries and holidays Aghagallon and Kickhams got a chance to look at their fringe players.

Namesakes, Ruairi McCann were in opposition for the first time in a while, both Ruairi’s having been allies for Antrim all season and it was the Aghagallon Ruairi who finished on the winning side.

Aghagallon got the first score of the game with a point on 3minutes with Kickhams replying with the next 3 points through Paddy Coey and one each for the McCann brothers Ruairi and Kealan.

The home side then hit a purple patch with 3 points and a goals from Davy McAlernon and Ruairi McCann to put themselves in a strong position but Liam Quinn showed his fighting spirit came back as he replied with 2 points for the visitors.

St. Mary’s responded as they scored the next 3 points with Sean Duffin getting Kickham’s last point of the half to leave them trailing 2-07 to 0-06 at the short whistle.

The second half opened with the dangerous Ruairi McCann scoring another goal to extend his side’s lead the sides then exchanged points with David McAlernon and Ruairi McCann scoring for Aghagallon and  Paddy Coey and Tiernan Mc Larnon 0-2 replying for Kickham’s.

The Kickham’s Ruairi McCann kicked his second point of the night followed by two more points for Sean Duffin but the visitors just could not get the goal they needed to get them back into the contest.

Both sides exchanged point during the closing stages as Tiernan McLarnon brought his total on the night to 0-03 but it was St. Mary’s emerged winners by six points.

A useful run out for both sides as they prepare for the forthcoming championship with the league title out of reach though Aghagallon can be pleased with their possible third placed finish.
