Cargin v Moneyglass
St. Ergnat’s Moneyglass proved too strong for neighbours Erin’s Own Cargin in this LGFA U16 Football League encounter in Toome during the week. The home side held their own during an entertaining opening half and a goal from Orlath Johnston just before the break left them trailing by just three at half time.
After the break the visitors found another gear however, hitting six second half goals and the home side had keeper Rosie Murray to thank for a number of excellent saves over the hour.
First half points from Ruby McErlain 0-2, JoJo Darragh 0-5 (2 f’s) and Molly Gribben in reply to points from Orlath Johnston and Laura Scullion for Cargin put Moneyglass in a strong position but the excellent Johnston struck with a goal in the 29th minute to raise the Cargin hopes.
That hope didn’t materialise however as Moneyglass hit the after-burners on the restart and with the elements in their favour and they finally found a way past the excellent Rosie Murray with a JoJo Darragh goal from the penalty spot in the 7th minute.
Leah Stewart, Katie McCloskey and Stewart again added goals by the end of the third quarter but the home side kept battling against impossible odds.
McCloskey completed her hat-trick with goals in the 49th and 50th minute and the visitors finished with points from Orlaith McAteer, Katie McCloskey and JoJo Darragh.
Cargin kept going to the end and were finally rewarded for their efforts when Roisin Quinn sent a free directly to the Moneyglass net with time almost up.
A steep learning curve for the Erin’s Own girls but it is one they will take lessons from and despite defeat there will be many aspects of the game the management will take encouragement from.
Moneyglass have been the team to beat at this level for some time and on the evidence of this performance it will take an excellent side to beat them in the coming season.
