St Brigid’s survive late scare to take the points

Antrim LGFA Senior Champiponship

St Brigid’s 2-15 Glenravel 4-7

St Brigid’s withstood a late Con Magees rally to get their LGFA Senior Championship campaign off to a winning start at Musgrave Park on Sunday evening. In an exciting game of football St Brigid’s were on top for long periods but the visitors ability to get goals kept them in the hunt until the end. The Belfast girls led by four going into injury time, but an Aimee Traynor goal cut Glenravel’s deficit to just one. There were a few anxious glances at the scoreboard in the that final minute as the visitors searched for an equalister, but a well taken point from play eased the pressure and saw thje home side deservedly over the finish line.

The first ten minutes of the game saw St Brigid’s open a three point gap as Hannah Donaghy, Ellie Murphy and Cliodhna Logan all pointed. An Aimee Traynor goal brought Glenravel level and they went ahead with a Clare Emerson point.

There was little between the sides but two goals from Molly Woulahan put the visitors in front, but a strong rally in the last five minutes of the first half, which brought goals from Hannah Donaghy and Theresa Mellon helped the south Belfast girls to a 2-7 to 3-3 lead by half time.

Donaghy increased the St Brigid’s lead early in the second half but Glenravel were level again when Coulter and Donnelly came back with points. The home team appeared to have taken control when they hit three in a row to go four clear with normal time almost up, but Glenravel’s little wizard Aimee Traynor struck her second goal to put the game back in the melting pot. The pressure was on the Musgrave Park girls but to their credit they were equal to it and a late point sealed the win for the home team.
