Dunloy dominate league opener against Davitt’s

Antrim Football League Division 2

Dunloy 2-12 Davitt’s 0-6

A dominant second half display saw last year’s senior finalists Dunloy get the better of visitors Davitt’s at Pearse Park on Saturday in the opening game of the Division 2 league.

An early point from Kevin McQuillan gave Dunloy the lead but Davitt’s goalkeeper Aaron Slane showed his dead-ball skills to send over the equaliser two minutes later. McQuillan put Dunloy back in front on nine minutes and they went two clear when Tom McFerran slotted over on ten minutes.

Conor John O’Sullivan closed the gap to one again but Dunloy’s highly influential captain McQuillan found the target again on 17 minutes. In the lead up to half time Aaron Slane sent over another free to cut the gap to a single point, but a point from a 45 by Dunloy centre forward Chrissy McMahon put the home team 0-5 to 0-3 ahead at the interval.

With wind advantage in the second half Dunloy began to open a gap and following early points from Chrissy McMahon and Ryan McFarlane corner forward Barry McCloskey struck the first goal of the game. It was all Dunloy at this stage and James Scally swung over a point, Kevin McQuillan added to his tally with another well taken point. Davitt’s had a mountain to climb at this stage and their plight got worse when the veteran Anthony Smith grabbed the Cuchullains second goal on twelve minutes.

Davitt’s full forward Caomhan Slane got his team’s first point of the second half on 45 minutues but though the scoring dried up two late points by Dunloy had them 2-12 to 0-6 clear at the end.
