Creggan in cruise control

O’Neill Sportswear Antrim Football League Division 1

Creggan 1-17 St Enda’s 0-5

A powerful second half display, when backed by the winds of Storm Kathleen, saw Creggan power away from St Enda’s to win in emphatic fashion in Sunday’s Division 1 league game.

Having most of the team at Ruairi McCann’s wedding the previous day would not be one of the recommended preparations by most sports coaches, but it didn’t appeared to have any detrimental effect on the Creggan players as they rushed into an early lead with two quick points, despite playing against the wing.

Aidan McKeown was left regretting the day astro turf golmouths were introduced when his ‘goal’ was dissalowed for a ‘square ball’

St Enda’s were struggling, despite having ‘Kathleen’ at their backs, but when Finn Nagle eventually got them off the mark they put together their best period of the game and with Donal Walsh, the veteran Philly Curran and Ronan O’Neill adding to their tally they went in at the break with a 0-4 to 0-3.

By the time the visitors raised their next flag the game was well and truly over and Creggan had added 1-14 without reply and the game was well and truly over. The home side just how to make use of the wind as they hit a series of excellent scores.

Conor Small had them level when he pointed within a minute of the restart and Tiernan McLarnon put them back ahead thirty seconds later. When Dominic McAteer got in for the only goal of the game soon afterwards the only thing in question was the size of the winning margin. The visitors had a bit of a let-off when Teddy McKeown had a goal ruled out for a square ball, but the big man still managed to add two excellent points while his teammates gave an exhibition of score taking as they sent them over from all angles to run out winners by fifteen points, St Enda’s getting their only score of the second half with literally the last kick of the game.
