Camogie Senior Division 2 Loughgiel v Rossa May 22nd, 2024
Loughgiel 1-16 Rossa 0-06
Match report and Photos – Michael Corcoran
At just over the halfway point in the senior Division 2 Camogie league, Loughgiel came into tonight’s game sitting at the top of the table on points difference and a game in hand. O’Donovan Rossa were in the bottom half with two games in hand, however they had defeated Ahoghill, who incidentally defeated Loughgiel by two points in the first game of the season. Tonight’s game should have been a hard call, but an on-form Shamrock’s squad battled the gusty wind to blow away any doubt over a home win.

Referee Fergus ‘Skinner’ McAlister rolled in the sliotar and after a midfield ruck, Loughgiel rolled out the ball and promptly found the uprights for their opening score within the first minute. Rossa would respond with their own point and both teams would tussle with the strong wind that blew from the lough road down to the clubhouse. Rossa had the advantage with the wind on their backs but didn’t manage to bank a significant score, especially important because Loughgiel would enjoy the advantage in the second half. McAlister blew for the break with the scoreboard displaying Loughgiel 0-05 Rossa 0-06.
In the second half, Loughgiel made more of the inclement weather and kept Rossa well into their own half for most of the thirty minutes. Loughgiel’s Orlagh Laverty and Anna Connelly would dominate in Rossa’s half, taking advantage of the ‘knocked down’ puck outs by the wind and over the thirty minutes, Rossa were unable to move the ball deep enough into Loughgiel’s half to attempt a score and kept their account closed at the six opening points. At the final whistle, the large ‘Fridge Raiders’ scoreboard illuminated the darkening sky, Loughgiel 1-16 Rossa 0-06.
