Faughs move level at the top, with a game in hand

Antrim Hurling League Division 2

Carey Faughs 1-18 St Gall’s 0-11

Carey moved level on points with Cloney Gaels at the top of the Division 2 league table when they beat St Gall’ at St Patrick’s Park, Ballyvoy on Wednesday evening, and with a game still in hand against Glenarm they find themselves in a strong position going into the second half of the campaign. Things didn’t look too promising for the Faughs as St Gall’s grabbed the first three points of the game, the third of them a great strike from a long range free by centre back Ryan Irvine.

The home side were creating chances but could not find the target until the 7th minute when Conal McGlynn pointed a free from 40 metres, and one minute later Caolan McCaughan cut the gap back to the minimum with a point from play.  Two minutes after that Carey hit the front when corner forward Chris Butler cut in along the endline and drilled a low shot home from close range, They followed that up with points from Butler and Callum Cane, but St Gall’s hit back with points from Dubaltach McLiam and Marcus Napier to trail by just three at the half way point. (1-06 to 0-6)

The third quarter of the game remained close as Marcus Napier and Conal McGlynn exchanged three points apiece, but Carey were getting the Lions’ share of possession and five points, two from McGlynn and three from ‘Rocket’ James Black saw them move nine clear. Sean McAreavey and McLiam added two points on either side of another by Black. The gap was out to eleven going into injury time but as substitute Eugene Cartley went for goal with a late free it was turned over the bar by the Faughs keeper to leave ten between them in the end
