ACHL Division 2

Shane O’Neill’s 0-21 Oisins

In a night that would go some way towards deciding who would finish in the top six after the split, Shane O’Neill’s went some way in securing their place in division 2A with a narrow win over visitors Oisin’s Glenariffe at Feystown on Wednesday night.

A large crowd had assembled at Forsythe Park for this game which looked like it would decide who would finish where when the midway split occurred.

Playing wind assisted in the first half, the visitors took an early two points lead only to be pegged back soon afterwards, in a tight, fast game in which tackles were strong and scores few.

Exchanges were fast and at time furious and after 30 minute hurling the sides could not be separated with Alec O’Boyle for the visators and Niall McGarel for Shane O’Neill’s both very sharp from dead ball situations.

The third quarter continued in similar fashion with the visitors moving two ahead, but 5 points on the spin from the Feystown side took the hosts from two down to three ahead.

A strong charge up-field on twenty minutes by corner back John Scullion saw him striking a point from fifty yards to put four between the teams. The men from Waterfoot then had a purple patch, drawing level as the final whistle neared but a foul on speedy forward Sean O’Boyle left Niall McGarel with an easy tap over for a minimum lead, one which would see them over the line.

This win secures Shane O’Neill’s place in the top six and keeps them in the chase for the Division 2 title while defeat has relegated Oisins to a place in 2B where they are joined by Tir na nOg, Carryduff, Loughgiel and Sarsfields.

Referee: Declan McGarry.
