Glenariffe-Glenravel first half display sets up victory

Antrim Minor Hurling League – Division 1

Cushendall 1-22 Glenariffe-Glenravel 5-14

Glenariffe-Glenravel held off a second half challenge from Cushendall to take the points in Sunday’s Minor Hurling League game at Pairc Mhuire, Cushendall. Leading by 4-8 to 0-9 at half time it all looked plain sailing for the visitors but Cushendall made a real fight of it in the second half and the Glenariffe-Glenravel had to be on their toes to keep the ‘Dall at bay.

Glenariffe-Glenravel flew from the traps at the start of the game and a goal from corner forward Oisin Gillan in the first minute gave them the perfect start. There was just a point between the sides after five minutes, but the visitors hit a purple patch as they grabbed 1-4, the second goal again coming from Gillan. Goal number three came from full forward Peadar McDonnell on fifteen minutes while Orrin O’Connor hit his team’s fourth just five minutes before the break to give his team a 4-8 to 0-9 half time lead.

Despite being reduced to fourteen men, points from Oran McCambride, Thomas McLaughlin (2) and Nicholas McLaughlin got the Ruairis up and going in the second half and with a fresh breeze behind them they set about reducing the gap. Two points from Orrin O’Connor from placed balls got Glenariffe-Glenravel going again on 38 minutes and by the 44th minute the gap was still at nine.

Cushendall kept plugging away and four points on the spin from Dylan McNaughton (2), Oisin Woodhouse and Charlie McAuley cut the gap back to five. Peadar McDonnell and Orrin O’Connor hit back for the visitors with well taken points and when O’Connor got in or his team’s fifth goal the game looked safe, though Cushendall kept battling to the end. The goal they were searching for finally came in injury time when Thomas McLaughlin drove a free through a packed goalmouth, but even though Oran McCambridge added another point it was just too late for the home side.
