Con Magees finish strong to beat Aghagallon

Antrim Football League – Division 1

St Mary’s Aghagallon 3-09 Con Magees Glenravel 1-19

Con Magees Glenravel made the long journey to Aghagallon on Wednesday evening and came away with a win to make it three wins out of six in this year’s Division 1 League.

In a hard fought and exciting game there was little between the sides throughout. The teams went in level at the break on 2-06 to to 1-09. The home side got their third goal early in the second half and looked well placed to push on from there, but the visitors restricted Aghagallon to just three more points for the remainder of the game while rattling off ten of their own to secure the points.

Early points from Conor and Luke McQuillan put Con Magees two up after four minutes but the home side edged in front after eight minutes when Michael McStravick fired home his team’s opening goal. Sean McKay levelled for the visitors with a point on nine minutes, but Aghagallon full forward Odhran Rooney got his team’s second goal soon afterwards to put them three clear. That lead was stretched to five when two points by Ruairi McShane and one from McStravick, in reply to one from Ryan Lennon for the visitors, but two from Lennon and McKay in he 22nd and 23rd minutes brought the visitors back to within a point.

Two by corner forward Sean Cavigan appeared to have set the home team up for a half time lead, but a goal in first half injury time by Declan Traynor tied up the score at 2-06 to 1-09 by the time referee Ray Matthews blew the half time whistle.

Eamon Fyfe edged Glenravel ahead early in the second half but Aghagallon midfielder Paddy Gowdy hit back with his team’s third goal to put them two clear. A great length of the field run by Eoin McCusker set up Sean McKay for a Glenravel point and Conlith O’Loan brought them back on terms in the 40th minute.

Aghagallon levelled again on 43 minutes but the Con Magees were beginning to gain the upper hand and they retook the lead when Conlith O’Loan, Sean McKay and Ryan Lennon all hit the target. With young centre half back Sean Higgins moving out to support his midfield duo the visitors gained a decided edge in this area in the final quarter where they outscored the home side by 0-05 to 0-01 in this period to win by four in the end and continute their good start to the season.
