St. James’ get back to winning ways

ACFL Division 1

Aldergrove 3.16 Ahoghill 2.11

Following a couple of recent defeats, St. James’ Aldergrove got back to winning ways when they entertained St. Mary’s Ahoghill on Saturday evening in Crumlin.

In a high scoring game played in wet conditions the home team came out strongest against a St. Mary’s side missing a few regulars because of the wedding of Fionnbar O’Neill the previous day.

James O’Connell would score 1.9 on the night including 3 two pointers but it would not be enough as Aldergrove had 8 different score takers over the hour with Oisin Graham getting a good 1-4 from midfield while 2 first half goals from Ryan McCarthy always had Aldergrove in front.

Niall ‘Boris’ O’Connell replied with a couple of goals for the visitors and was a constant threat in the visitors full-forward line and only 4 points separate the teams at half time.

Oisin Graham’s goal early in the second half settled the home side and they were always able to maintain a 4 or 5 point cushion to the end.

Both sides turned in good performance in difficult conditions in a game that was well refereed by Piarias McCaffery.

St. James move onto 14 points from 10 starts with six wins, two draws and only a couple of defeats and the management will be well pleased at their progress to date.

Not for the first time in recent years, St. Mary’s find themselves too close to the relegation zone for comfort but they are renowned fighters and are quite capable of climbing the table when they get everyone on board.
