St Brigid’s impress with big win over St Paul’s

Northern Switchgear Antrim Senior Football Championship

Group 4

St Brigid’s 5-21 Naomh Pól 1-10

St Brigid’s made the perfect start to the Group 4 Campaign when they proved too strong for St Paul’s at Musgrave Park on Sunday. With a fresh breeze at their backs the home team were soon in their stride and points from James Smith, Paul Bradley and JJ Higgins were followed by a goal, which was palmed into the St Paul’s net by Patrick Finnegan.

St Paul’s came back with three of their own through Lorcan Phillips, Pat Craword and Conal Duffy but the pendulum swung back in St Brigid’s favour as Patrick Finnegan, James Smith and Joe Finnegan raised white flags before corner forward Ryan Tweedy got his team’s second goal.

A cleverly taken goal by St Paul’s midfielder Conor Hughes gave the Shaw’s Road side a bit of hope but St Brigid’s finished the half strongly three unanswered points and a 2pointer from Ronan Boyle, before Walsh came back with a beauty of a 2pointer for St Paul’s with the last kick of the first half.

Leading by 2-14 to 1-05 at the break St Brigid’s hit the first three points of the new half Tweedy, Finnegan and second half substitute McGurk. Another peach of a 2pointer by  the visitors young corner forward showed there was a still a spark in St Paul’s but for the remainder of the game the home team were totally dominant, despite making a series of substitutions. James Smith got his team’s third goal, on 42 minutes, Tweedy made it four not long after while Patrick Finnegan got the fifth.

The win puts St Brigid’s in the driving seat in Group 4, but they have to travel to Ahoghill in two weeks’ time to take on Aghagallon’s surprise conquerors. St Paul’s on the other hand have home advantage against Aghagallon on the same night.
