A point just seconds from the final hooter by full-forward Maria O’Neill crowned Antrim the TG4 All-Ireland Junior Champions at Croke Park on Sunday afternoon. In a heart-stopping, pulsating finish, O’Neill displayed immense composure, cutting inside four Carlow defenders to slot over a spectacular winner and seal a victory that, just moments earlier, appeared to be slipping from the Saffrons’ grasp.

A Dream Start for the Saffrons

Antrim hit the ground running on the hallowed turf, launching an attack straight from the throw-in. After a sweeping sequence of passes, an initial attempt on goal was thwarted, but the Carlow goalkeeper’s clearance was brilliantly charged down by right-half forward Mellon, who reacted fastest to rifle the ball into the net with just ninety seconds on the clock.

The Saffron attack continued to fire, with Orlaith Prenter splitting the posts in the sixth minute after a sharp move orchestrated by O’Neill. Carlow, however, quickly settled into the contest, largely driven by the strong running of their brilliant centre forward Clíodhna Ní Shé, who opened their account from a 20-metre run and followed it up with a free after a breach in the Antrim defence.

Prenter, displaying her characteristic accuracy, curled over a beautiful left-footed score to keep Antrim pushing forward. O’Neill followed suit on eleven minutes, cutting in from the left to extend the lead to 1-03 to 0-02. The Antrim pressure was relentless; another Prenter strike required Hawkeye confirmation before being awarded, and midfielder Lynch added a well-taken point from play.

Antrim could have stretched their lead further in the nineteenth minute when the ball broke kindly for Prenter, but the Carlow keeper pulled off a magnificent save. Down the other end, Carlow’s Ní Shé kept the scoreboard ticking with precision free-taking, and their number fourteen added a brilliant solo score, side-stepping her marker to reduce the gap to just two points.

As the half drew to a close, Laura Dahunsi sent Prenter through on goal again, only for the Carlow netminder to block the effort with her feet. Deep in injury time, O’Neill had a final glorious chance, but the hooter sounded just as she unleashed a shot that rattled the crossbar.

Tension Builds in the Second Half

The second half brought near misses and soaring tension. Dahunsi dragged a close-range effort wide with her left foot early on, while Carlow’s number eleven continued to punish Antrim indiscretions with another pointed free. Prenter restored the two-point cushion immediately from the resulting kick-out, and added another from a placed ball after the Antrim center-half back was hauled down on the edge of the square.

Antrim captain Bronagh Devlin nearly raised a second green flag in the 40th minute when her thunderous effort flew just over the bar. Moments later, heroics were required at the other end, as Antrim’s number three executed a massive block to deny a certain goal for Carlow’s substitute number 22.

The momentum, however, began to violently swing. Carlow’s number 15 narrowed the margin before scrambling a goal in the 48th minute—a devastating blow for Antrim after several missed opportunities to clear their lines. Suddenly, the Saffrons found themselves trailing for the first time in the match.

A Grandstand Finish

Facing adversity, Antrim dug deep. In the 53rd minute, Aoibheann Monaghan sparked a surging run out of defence, linking up with Prenter, who swung over a crucial equaliser. Three minutes later, Monaghan was at it again, carrying the ball from defence through midfield before being brought down on the 20-metre line. O’Neill confidently dispatched the free to edge Antrim back in front, and followed it up a minute later with a superb strike from outside the D.

When Monaghan fired over a brilliant point from play in the 58th minute to push the lead to three, the title felt secure. But Croke Park had one more twist in store. In the 59th minute, Carlow substitute Meghan Townsend found the back of the net with a brilliant strike, leveling the game and setting up an agonising finale.

From the ensuing restart, an attempted long pass by O’Neill was intercepted. Antrim hearts were firmly in mouths as Carlow broke forward in desperate search of a winner. The Saffron defence held firm, breaking down the attack and sending the ball back down the field. O’Neill gathered possession, and despite being swarmed by four Carlow defenders, she somehow engineered the space to fire over the ultimate winning score with a mere ten seconds remaining on the clock.
