Brídíní Óga Glenravel 2-2 Lámh Dhearg 2-1

Ballycastle 7-6 Portglenone 0-0

The semi-finals and final of the Féile na nGael B competition took place at Randalstown on Sunday after Brídíní Óga Glenravel, Lámh Dhearg, Ballycastle and Portglenone qualified from their group stages on Saturday.

First into action were Brídíní Óga Glenravel and Lámh Dhearg and the north Antrim club, playing with the strong cross-field breeze in their favour, got off the mark when Aisling Mulholland and Erin Coulter combined to set Emer Donnelly up for a goal which she kicked over the line.

Emily Sharpe added two frees soon after but Devla McCaulfield pulled one back for the Belfast side just before the break.

During the second half there was a lot of pressure from Lámh Dhearg, but Brídíní Óga broke upfield and Emily Sharpe’s punt into the area was caught by Emer Donnelly and flashed to the net.

It proved to be the decisive score despite two late goals from Lamh Dhearg – Tiarna Fagan soloed through for the first and Emily Annett added a second. But it came too late and Glenravel made the final.

The second semi-final was more one way traffic with Ballycastle grabbing the initiative from the start and playing the opening half inside the Portglenone 45. However by half-time they were only 1-1 to 0-0 ahead due to strong defence from the Gerladine’s.

However they soon made the wind assistance count during the second period with goals from Aoibheann Donnelly, Cara Brolly and Janey McIntosh helping them build up a 7-6 to 0-0 victory and passage into the final.

Ballycastle 3-8 Brídíní Óga Glenravel 1-1

Ballycastle started the final well and put Brídíní Óga on the back foot for the opening ten minutes during which Shannagh Hegarty scored 1-2 and Aoibheann Donnelly and Cara Brolly a point each.

However the Glenravel girls stormed back with a goal from Emer Donnelly and a long range free from Clodagh McPeake only for Shannagh Heggarty to undo the good work with a goal in first half injury time.

During the second half Glenravel’s defence worked extremely hard to close out the Ballycastle threat but a great angled shot from Cara Brolly found the target. The girls from the ‘Town’ added four more points as they pulled clear to claim a place in the All-Ireland series in Cork in June.

Loughgiel battle back in second half

All County Camogie League Division 2

McQuillan’s 1.13 Loughgiel 5.14

McQuillan’s and Loughgiel camogs served up a great game of camogie in their 3rd clash of the week, this time it was the turn of the D2 girls. McQuillan’s raced to an early lead with points from Aoife Toner and Fionnuala Kelly before Cara Mc Intyre slotted over for the home side. Nuala Devlin and Alica Butler added 2 more in a period of dominance for Mc Quillan’s before Annie Lynn grabbed Loughgiel’s second point. The visitors continued to press forward and went on to a 0.6 to 0.2 lead with 20 minutes gone thanks to Emma Laverty and Maria Bakewell. The Shamrock girls responded well with a goal pushed over the line by Cara McIntyre which was to be the first of her 2 goals in this half. Ciara Laverty also raised a green flag to put Loughgiel ahead by 2points which were soon cancelled out by the hard working Emma Laverty and Maria Bakewell pointing to level the sides for the second time. A goal came from a free was lobbed in by Emma Laverty for Mc Quillan’s nudged the Ballycastle girls ahead, while her cousin Ciara Laverty scored twice with Fionnuala Kelly pointing just before the half time whistle to level the teams at 1.10 to 3.4.

The second half saw Loughgiel come out of the traps stronger, with substitute Anna Connolly causing havoc with her strong runs exploiting space in the McQuillan’s defence pointing twice. Fionnuala Toner and Bronagh McCaughan and Caitlin Heggarty mopped up serious pressure as the Loughgiel girls hit form and sent over 6 more points from Carla McGarry, Kirsty McKendry, Charley McCarry and Louise McKillop, while Ballycastle only converted 3 of their chances from the in-form Nuala Devlin and Maria Bakewell. Loughgiel’s defence was solid with Aoife O’Mullan, Katie Lynn and Megan McGarry thwarting the visitors’ attacks. At this stage McQuillan’s were trailing by 5 points and despite the efforts of Niamh O’Neill and Christina Donnelly they were unable to raise another flag during the last 10 minutes. Charley McCarry and Mary McKillen finished off the game with 2 superbly taken goals to leave the game settled at 5.14 to 1.13. Referee Vincent Boyle commended both teams on the excellent standard of play, saying it was one of the best games he has seen all year!

Dominant first half sends Dunloy to victory

ACCL Division 2

Dunloy 1.11 (14)

Tír na nÓg 1.6 (9)

Dunloy hosted Tír na nÓg on Thursday evening in the All County Division 2 Camogie League. The home side dominated for the first half, keeping Tír na nÓg scoreless for 24 minutes. It was a game of two half’s and the visitors came out fighting in the second half to reduce the deficit to two points at one stageafter being 8 down. However Dunloy had youth on their side and the visitors seemed to be limited with a small squad out on the night to hold on for the win with a late hand passed goal.y

10 minutes into the game, Dunloy were in the driving seat with Caoimhe Molly and Erin Trainor bossing the middle of the field and setting up attacks for Dearbhail Elliott, Erin Elliott and Mary Martin. Despite leading by 5 points, Dunloy could have made more use with their possession after shooting numerous wides. Tír na nÓg struggled to get to grips and move the ball into the opposite half of the field from the puc outs with regular keeper Ciara Devine out injured and players having to step up and fill in for her in her absence. Dervla O’Neill dropped deep to pick up many puc outs and found Aimee McAtamney who shot from distance but failed to raise a white flag. After 24 minutes Tír na nÓg broke the deadlock after Caitlin McGaughey caught a puc out and played Emma Louise McAreavy in for the home side’s only score of the half, leaving the score 0.8 to 0.1 at half time. Without relentless defending from Aine Mooney, Carla O’Neill and Cameron McGaughey, Dunloy could have led by much more.

Tír na nÓg found a new lease of life in the second half and with some positional reshuffling they got to grips with the game. Niamh Martin had a shot saved but on the next attack she was fouled and Emily Falloon knocked the free over the bar. Caitlin Martin then drove forward from centre half back and taking on three players she narrowly missed the target. Emily Falloon kicked into action when Aimee McAtamney launched a high ball to the edge of the square. Emily caught it and on the turn buried it to the net, on the puc out Emily turned this over and pointed again to leave 4 points in the game.

Tír na nÓg were now on top and had momentum on their side, with fouls on Niamh Callan who did an excellent player marking job in the second half and a long range free, Falloon added another two points onto the scoreboard. Rachel Bonnes and Caitlin McGaughey linked up well with the next ball in which McGaughey pointed. With the game in the boiling pot, Dunloy went on the attack and despite a questionable free out the play continued and Dearbhail Elliot hand passed the ball to the net to take the lead to 5. With a few minutes remaining Dunloy had done enough to hold on to secure the win.
