St. Ergnat’s continue to set the pace

 ACFL Division 2

St. Teresa’s 1-13 St. Ergnat’s 3-13

St. Ergnat’s continue to set the pace in division 2 and on Wednesday night as they recorded another good win when they travelled to the Glen Road and defeated St. Teresa’s.

The visitors opened the scoring with points from Seanchan and Colm Duffin before Eoghan Hamill got the hosts on their way with a point in the 11th minute.

Aidan McErlain edged the visitors two ahead again but they were rocked back on their heels when Eoghan Hamill fired home the game’s opening goal for St. Teresa’s with 13 minutes gone.

John Mallon added a point to move the Glen Road side two ahead but the visitors replied through Aidan McErlain and Colm Duffin to draw level with 18 minutes gone and appeared to be taking control.

It was St. Teresa’s however who finished the half on top as Niall McCann kicked three points between the 20th and 27th minute with Colm Duffin replying for the visitors and John Mallon concluding the first half scoring with a late St. Teresa’s point.

Conor Boyd for Moneyglass and Conor Mallon for the home side exchanged points to keep the gap at three with three minutes of the new half gone before Aidan McErlain struck with a goal for the visitors to level matters in the 5th minute.

This score seemed to fire St. Ergnat’s into life and Tyler Cassidy followed immediately with a point before the excellent McErlain finished to the net again for his side’s second goal.

The momentum was very much with Moneyglass as Colm Duffin fired over his third point of the evening in the 9th minute with Niall McCann replying with St. Teresa’s second point of the half to briefly relieve the pressure.

Back came St. Ergnat’s with full-back, Paul Duffin getting forward to split the posts and Aidan McErlain adding another to move his side six ahead as they continued to dictate matters.

John Mallon struck a fine 2 pointer in an effort to get his side back into contention but it was immediately cancelled out as Conor Boyd raised the visitor’s third green flag of the evening.

Mallon was doing everything in his power to get the home side going and he added another 2 pointer with 8 minutes remaining but it was to no avail with Ronan Campbell and Paul Duffin, with his second of the evening responding for the visitors.

The final point of the evening would fall to St. Teresa’s but at this stage St. Ergnat’s had matters well and truly sewn up as they join Sarsfields on 8 points from 4 starts, the Stewartstown Road side recording a resounding 3-18 to 0-9 win away to Glenavy on the same evening.

McMullan inspires St Patrick’s comeback

ACFL Division 2

St Comgall’s Antrim 1-08  St Patrick’s Lisburn 1-09

A heavily bandaged Josh McMullan, injured in the opening quarter of this division 2 meeting of St Comgall’s and Naomh Padraig at Dunsilly on Wednesday night, returned to action for the second period to inspire his side to victory.

The home side dominated in the opening period with Lewis Higgins and Josh Henry in control in the central zone and Myles Devine and Tom Patchett causing problems to the visitor’s rear guard and they looked very much on the way to victory leading 1-07 to 0-02 at the end of the first period.

The visitors only managed one score in the opening half when Adam Patterson despatched a ‘two pointer’ and they trailed heavily at the break with Barry Burns men seemingly in complete charge.

Myles Devine opened the home side’s account with an early point with Tom Pachett making addition in kind shortly after.

The visitors opened their account in the 12th minute as mid fielder Lewis Higgins despatched a ‘two pointer but this score failed to inspire a call to action for the visitors.

Naomh Comhghall gained in stride following the visitors opening score with the front men Devine and Patchett causing problems and when the former found the back of the net after good work by Sean Og Gribbin and Tom Patchett they looked in charge.

The visitors, despite the efforts of Lewis Patterson and Ben McMullan were unable to respond as the home side continued to call the shots with Devine, Patchett, and the hard grafting Josh Henry leading the charge.

The second quarter progressed in similar fashion to the first and when Devine was sent away by a Sean Og Gribbin delivery to find the back of the net in the 20th minute Naomh Comhghall were in command.

They added further points from Gribbin and Ryan Clarke to ensure a 1-07 to 0-02 lead for the home side at the break.

Naomh Padraig, positively out gunned in the first period returned to action shortly with McMullan back in action and he would provide much needed inspiration to the Lisburn side.

The Lisburn side had been toothless in attack in the opening half but they were quickly into action as the second got under way as they added points through Oisin Gorman 0-3 and the back in action McMullan added another.

The visitors were on the march as their confidence grew as the previously dominant home side lost their way but their hopes were raised when the hard grafting Myles Devine grabbed back to back points.

The visitors were quick to return fire with a 52nd minute Oisin Gorman point and only a single score separated the sides at 1-08 to 0-08.

The Antrim town side had lost their way and were now making unforced errors and when a lofted delivery opened the way for Eoin Dixon to fist to the net the visitors were on terms 1-08 to 1-08.

The last minutes saw the home side strive to retain parity but the momentum was now very much with the visitors and mid-fielder Patterson pointed in added time to ensure an away victory.

First win of the season for Rasharkin

ACFL Division 2

Rasharkin 2-10 Davitt’s 1-8

Both teams started cagey in the opening 5 minutes, with Davitt’s settling first and both teams failing to create any significant chances.

Davitt’s took the lead with an early point but Rasharkin settled and during the early exchanges there was little between the sides.

The first 20 minutes was a low scoring affair with Davitt’s retaining possession around the 45 but creating little in the way of scoring opportunities while Rasharkin were wasteful in their attacking play giving away easy possession in the final third.

Rasharkin were working hard and denying Davitt’s possession and it was the home side who were first to register with two early points. They were made to pay for their wastefulness however when the visitors struck for the game’s opening goal to take the lead.

Both sides exchanged points as the visitors maintained their one point advantage as St. Mary’s continued to hold the upper hand but were wasteful in their shooting.

The home side worked an excellent turnover however to break away and score a well worked goal of their own with Oisin Casey applying the finish after a move from defence to attack.

They followed quickly with a point and then in the final minute of the half Tiernan O’Boyle got through for a second goal with the big mid-fielder finishing from close range.

O’Boyle’s goal put the men from Dreen in a strong position going into half time when they led by six on a score-line of 2-7 to 1-4 as they finished the half on top.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first as Rasharkin came out strong but Davitt’s created a few early chances to get on the scoreboard but failed to convert.

Rasharkin were dominating the kick-out and allowing the opposition little space to attack and create any significant chances.

Both sides traded points to keep the gap between the sides at 6 points before the visitors had a player dismissed as things got a little heated.

The home side controlled the remainder of the second half and while it was a tense affair they ran out comfortable winners by 5 points.

A strong performance from the Dreen side who will be pleased to get their first win of the season and they will hope to build on it as the season progresses.

Rasharkin: Cahir Henderson, Pearce Kelly, Emmett McFerran, Connor Higgins, Colm Kennedy, Fergus Quigg, Pearce McTague, Jack Quinn, Tiernan O’Boyle , Killian O’Boyle, Daniel Doherty, Oran McMullan, Oisin Casey, Brian Og O’Neill, Cormac McMullan

Early pace setters Moneyglass serve notice

ACFL Division 2

Moneyglass 8-10 Rasharkin 1-7

St. Ergnat’s Moneyglass are the early pace setters in division 2 and on Wednesday night they served notice that they are likely to be challengers for the title after making the drop from division 1 last year.

Much of last year’s demise was down to the loss of players with a number moving to Australia and they were forced to hand debuts to a number of youngsters.

This season Benny Marron’s side has shown a lot of improvement and the knowhow the former St. Ergnat’s keeper has brought to the table is producing early season results.

Narrow wins over Naomh Comhghall at home and Gort na Mona away were as much down to battling performances and organisation as ability but on Wednesday night the Moneyglass side shook of the shackles and it was South West rivals, Rasharkin who felt the full force.

Seanchan Duffin got them on their way with an early goal with Tyler Cassidy getting a second and Cassidy and Sean Boyd adding points.

The home side were running riot and Conor Boyd got through for a fourth goal and added a good 2 pointer as St. Mary’s struggled to contain a rampant St. Ergnat’s side.

There would be no respite for the men from Dreen as the game moved into the second half as Aidan McErlain found the net twice in quick succession and Charlie McCloskey got in for another before Tyler Cassidy completed his hat trick.

Moneyglass now move top of the table on maximum points with Sarsfields who had a good win over St. Teresa’s with St. Ergnat’s holding a better score difference.

St. Ergnat’s scorers: Tyler Cassidy 3-3, Aidan McErlain 2-1, Conor Boyd 1-3, Seanchan Duffin 1-0, Charlie McCloskey 1-0, Sean Boyd 0-3

Naomh Padraig too good for lacklustre Glenavy

ACFL Division 2

Naomh Padraig Lisburn 2-12 Glenavy 0-9

Naomh Padraig, Lisburn proved too good for a lack luster St. Joseph’s Glenavy at Kirkwoods Park on Wednesday night. The visitors pointed three early frees from the boot of Fergal Henry to lead 0-3 to 0-2 after 11 minutes but flattered to deceive as the home side took control.

Oisin Gorman from a pointed free and Rudi Smyth had given the Kirkwoods Park side an early lead and they reacted smartly to Henry’s cameo contribution with Oisin Gorman prominent as they took control.

Gorman would score 1-4 before the break but Naomh Padraig’s first goal came from the boot of Eoin Dixon as he punished a bad kick-out to finish to the net.

In between Colm Burns, Rory Kennedy and Rudi Smyth 0-2 added points as a well drilled Naomh Padraig put themselves in a commanding position when they led 2-11 to 0-5 at the break.

Glenavy’s first point from play arrived late in the half from Fiontan O’Boyle with Paddy Gallager adding another before the break to leave his side trailing by 12 at the break.

The second half became something of a foul ridden none event as Naomh Padraig closed ranks and the Lisburn side would add only one further point as the visitors fought to get back into the game.

They had little success though Ruadhan McKenna in the home goals pulled of an excellent early save as the visitors briefly threatened before Oisin Gorman moved his side 13 in front with his side’s only score of the half.

After that it was a case of what we have- we hold but Glenavy never looked like getting the scores they needed to get back into contention and it was left to Fergal Henry who converted four second half frees to put a better look on the final score-line.

A good start to the season for Naomh Padraig with two wins from three starts and it moves them above Wednesday night’s visitors and augers well for the season ahead.

Naomh Padraig: 1 Ruadhan McKenna, 2 Jack McMullan, 3 Sean Burns, 4 Luca Mulholland, 5 Josh McMullan, 6 Ben McMullan, 7 Che Smyth, 8 Brendan McGarr, 9 Adam Patterson, 10 Rory Kennedy, 11 Oisin Gorman, 12 Colm Burns, 13 James Morgan, 14 Rudi Smyth, 15 Eoin Dixon

St. Joseph’s: 1 Darragh De Brun, 2 Timmy Honeyford, 3 Odhran Arthurs, 4 Rian Phillips, 5 Pearse O’Neill, 6 Padhraic McKevitt, 7 Jonathan Phillips, 8 Ben McCambridge, 9 Ciaran Loney, 10 11 Patrick Gallagher, 12 Darragh Armstrong, 13 Jack Shannon, 14 Fergal Henry, 15 Fiontan O’Boyle
