Naomh Treasa secured 2 points in their 6th round clash with Naomh Éanna at Pairc Mhic Dhomhnaill/ Úi Dhoctairtigh on Wednesday evening. Both teams started well trading scores quickly after throw-in. Naomh Treasa opened the scoring through the efforts of Eoghan Hamill and Jay Mallon however Naomh Éanna quickly responded with 2 points and a two pointer to pull ahead 0-02 to 0-04.

The Hightown side kept the score board ticking over with a further point added shortly after. Naomh Treasa worked hard in defence the entire game, turning over a Naomh Éanna play and transitioning quickly into their own attack.

The result of which saw Naomh Treasa’s Eoghan Hamill pulled down in the box and a penalty awarded to the Glen Road side. Jay Mallon stepped up to convert making the game all square at 1-02 to 0-5.

Both teams played with pace, transitioning at speed and moving the ball quickly much to the delight of their supporters. Naomh Treasa made the most of this with Eoghan Hamill moving at speed to put the leather in the back of the net after the ball spilled in front of the Naomh Éanna goal.

Naomh Éanna continued to apply the pressure, punishing Naomh Treasa with a two-pointer from a short kick out gone astray and added a further point in quick succession thereafter. Naomh Treasa finished the first half strong with points from Darren McCann, Eoghan Hamill and Jay and Conor Mallon to go into half time with a 4-point lead, 2-06 to 0-08.

The second half mirrored the first, with Naomh Treasa opening their scoring account with a two-pointer free. The sides continued to trade scores, with the Glen Road side maintaining a lead throughout.

Both managers made use of their benches on what was a warm night. With the subs adding to the final totals for both teams, Austin Drum had the final say on the night for Naomh Treasa with a great left-footed effort. An enjoyable game of football played at great pace with Naomh Treasa deservedly coming away with the win.

Moneyglass continue to impress as they keep pace with Sarsfields at the top

ACFL Division 2

Moneyglass 1-23 Davitt’s 2-7

Moneyglass recorded their 5th win in 6 starts as they keep pace with Sarsfields at the top of division 2 when they entertained Davitt’s on Wednesday night.

The Falls Road side have struggled for results this season and currently sit at the bottom of the table and they faced a stiff task here when they made the visit to the parish of Duneane and so it proved to be.

The home side opened brightly and led by 0-4 to 0-1 after 12 minutes in a low scoring opening period with Tyler Cassidy, Colum Duffin (2pts) and Fearghal Duffin on target and Davitt’s opening their account through James Lindsay.

St. Ergtnat’s continued to hold the upper hand with Cassidy striking his side’s second 2 pointer and Conor Boyd adding a point to move them 6 ahead by the 20th minute.

Davitt’s were battling hard but finding scores hard to come by but Niall McParland brought them to life when he found the net in the 21st minute and John Sullivan added a point to close the gap to two.

It was St. Ergnat’s who finished strongly however with Kevin McCann, Tyler Cassidy, Sean Boyd and Connor O’Kane firing over unanswered points to leave them 1-11 to 1-4 ahead at the break.

Colum Duffin extended the Moneyglass lead to eight with a point on the restart but Caoimhin Slane replied with two for the visitors as they fought to get back into contention.

It was end to end at this stage of the contest as Conleith McCann for the hosts and Caoimhin Slane exchanged further scores but once again the scores dried up for the West Belfast side as St. Ergnat’s found another gear.

Conor Boyd, Colum Duffin, Tyler Cassidy, Connor O’Kane and Seanchan Duffin all raised white flags before Anthony Rowntree fired past James McLaughlin to momentarily raise his side’s expectation.

It was too little, too late however and the joint league leaders finished strongly with Connor O’Kane, Tyler Cassidy and substitute Ronan Campbell all raising white flags to leave them comfortable winners.

This win leaves St. Ergnat’s level on points but trailing Sarsfield’s on score difference after the Stewartstown Road side recorded a good victory over Naomh Comhghall at Dunsilly.

Naomh Padraig stay in touch

ACFL Division 2

St. Mary’s Rasharkin 0-8 Naomh Padraig Lisburn 1-20

Naomh Padraig Lisburn stayed in touch with leaders Moneyglass and Sarsfields with a comprehensive win over a depleted St. Mary’s Rasharkin at a sun kissed Dreen on Wednesday night.

The Lisburn side have suffered just one defeat this season and in truth that statistic was never in doubt as they took the game to St. Mary’s right from the throw-in.

Playing a delightful brand of fast flowing football they had built up a 0-4 to 0-0 lead after five minutes with Oisin Gorman (f), Adam Patterson, Brendan McGirr and Patterson again the men on target.

The home side were finding it difficult to get their hands on the ball but Brian Og O’Neill opened their account from a long range free in the 7th minute.

It provided only temporary respite however and with Patterson and McGirr dominating at mid-field they added a stream of unanswered points through Rudi Smyth and the excellent  Oisin Gorman 0-4 (2f’s) to lead by nine with 16 minutes gone.

Rasharkin had been under the cosh for most of the opening quarter but they came to life through an excellent Oisin Casey point and Brian Og O’Neill added a couple of pointed frees as they enjoyed a short spell of supremacy.

It was Naomh Padraig who finished the half on top however and Colm Burns and Adam Patterson added late points to leave it 0-11 to 0-4 in favour of the Lisburn side at the short whistle.

Adam Patterson increased that lead to 8 within 20 seconds of the restart before Brian Og O’Neill pointed two frees at the other end to leave six between the sides.

Rasharkin were unable to win enough ball around the middle third however and the visitors came back strongly with Cathair Henderson in the Rasharkin goals pulling off a great save to deny Rudi Smyth at the expense of a point.

A goal was not long in coming however and another fine move, started by Josh McMullan deep in defence saw Adam Patterson finish to the Rasharkin net and it was as good as over.

Oisin Gorman and Benjamin McMullan added points as the visitors emptied their bench as Brian Og fired over his sixth free of the evening with substitute Doran Thompson replying from a free at the other end.

Rory Kennedy and Thompson again extended the visitors lead to 15 with Brian Og concluding the Rasharkin scoring from his 7th of the game and Eoin Dixon bringing matters to a close with an injury time point for Naomh Padraig.

A good win for an excellent Naomh Padraig who have now recorded five wins from six starts and sit just a point behind Sarsfields and Moneyglass in the race for the title.

An under strength Rasharkin had little answer to them on the night with Brian Og O’Neill their outstanding performer and they will hope to get their walking wounded back on board, sooner rather than later as they find themselves perilously close to the bottom of the table.

Rasharkin: 1 Cathair Henderson, 2 Pearce Kelly, 3 Pearse McTague, 4 Daniel McGurk, 5 Colm Kennedy, 6 Fergus Quigg, 7 Oran McMullan, 8 Jack Quinn, 9 Tiernan O’Boyle, 10 Killian O’Boyle, 11 Donagh Quigg, 12 Daniel Doherty, 13 Oisin Casey, 14 Brian Og O’Neill, 15 Cormac McMullan.

Naomh Padraig: 1 Ruadhan McKenna, 2 Jack McMullan, 3 Sean Burns, 4 Jack Broderick, 5 Josh McMullan, 6 Benjamin McMullan, 7 Che Smyth, 8 Brendan McGirr, 9 Adam Patterson, 10 Rory Kennedy, 11 Oisin Gorman, 12 Colm Burns, 13 Jude Rafferty, 14 Eoin Dixon, 18 Rudi Smyth

Glenavy overcome the Naomh Comhghall Challenge

ACFL Division 2

Glenavy 2-17 Naomh Comhghall 1-10

St. Joseph’s Glenavy recovered from last week’s heavy defeat to Sarsfields when they overcame the challenge of newly promoted Naomh Comhghall in a good game at Chapel Hill on Wednesday night.

The visitors started brightly with Ryan Clarke responding to a Fergal Henry opening point to finish a well worked build up to the Glenavy net. Ruairi Griffin added a point to put the visitors three ahead and the Antrim town side were looking sharp during the opening exchanges.

It took St. Joseph’s some time to settle but a point from Finn Shannon and goal from Fergal Henry, following an excellent build up that began deep in defence, got them on their way.

Pearse O’Neill added a second goal for the hosts and Shane Hinfey replied with a point for the visitors as Glenavy began to gain the initiative and two points from the impressive Finn Shannon opened up a 2-4 to 1-2 lead with 12 minutes gone.

Naomh Comhghall replied through a Ryan Clarke pointed free but the men in orange were starting to dictate and Fergal Henry fisted over before Shannon struck a fine 2 pointer for the home side.

The visitors looked in a spot of trouble but finished the half on top when Tom Patchett firing over and followed with another from a fisted effort to close the gap to five at the turn over.

Half Time  2-7 to 1-5

Ryan Clarke reduced the deficit from a pointed free on the restart as Naomh Comhghall threatened a comeback but they flattered to deceive as the Chapel Hill side resumed control.

Finn Shannon, Fergal Henry 0-2 and Dominic Gallagher moved them 8 ahead again as the greater physicality and knowhow of the home side began to reap reward and further points from Henry (Free), Pearse O’Neill and Ciaran Loney put them in complete control.

The visitors were still fighting to get themselves back into contention with Tom Patchett leading the way and he kicked two fine points and added another 2 pointer in an effort to get his side going again.

It failed to materialise however with substitute Mickey McCourt fisting over at the other end and Fergal Henry and Chris Grant concluding the scoring with three unanswered points for the Chapel Hill men.

A good win for a St. Joseph’s side whose greater experience than their opponents was decisive in the end with Dominc Gallagher proving a real handful on the edge of the square.

Finn Shannon had his best game of the season for the home side while Fergal Henry and Pearse O’Neill were others to catch the eye in a solid Glenavy side.

Naomh Comhghall are finding the going tough in the higher division and their loss to Naomh Padraig last time out certainly did nothing to help their confidence.

They have plenty of ability in their side however but need a second win to get them going again and in Ryan Clarke and Tom Patchett they had outstanding performers.

Glenavy: 16 Matthew Lawlor, 2 Jonathan Phillips, 3 Odhran Arthurs, 4 Ryan Phillips, 5 Padraic McKevitt, 6 Oisin Hamill, 17 Darrach Doherty, 8 Fiontan O’Boyle, 9 Ciaran Loney, 10 Fergal Henry, 11 Patrick Gallagher, 12 Pearse O’Neill, 13 Darragh Armstrong, , 14 Dominic Gallagher, 15 Finn Shannon.

Subs: Michael Johnston for Ryan Phillips, Fergus Cunningham for D Gallagher, Mickey McCourt for Darragh Armstrong, Chris Grant for Darrach Doherty

St. Ergnat’s continue to set the pace

 ACFL Division 2

St. Teresa’s 1-13 St. Ergnat’s 3-13

St. Ergnat’s continue to set the pace in division 2 and on Wednesday night as they recorded another good win when they travelled to the Glen Road and defeated St. Teresa’s.

The visitors opened the scoring with points from Seanchan and Colm Duffin before Eoghan Hamill got the hosts on their way with a point in the 11th minute.

Aidan McErlain edged the visitors two ahead again but they were rocked back on their heels when Eoghan Hamill fired home the game’s opening goal for St. Teresa’s with 13 minutes gone.

John Mallon added a point to move the Glen Road side two ahead but the visitors replied through Aidan McErlain and Colm Duffin to draw level with 18 minutes gone and appeared to be taking control.

It was St. Teresa’s however who finished the half on top as Niall McCann kicked three points between the 20th and 27th minute with Colm Duffin replying for the visitors and John Mallon concluding the first half scoring with a late St. Teresa’s point.

Conor Boyd for Moneyglass and Conor Mallon for the home side exchanged points to keep the gap at three with three minutes of the new half gone before Aidan McErlain struck with a goal for the visitors to level matters in the 5th minute.

This score seemed to fire St. Ergnat’s into life and Tyler Cassidy followed immediately with a point before the excellent McErlain finished to the net again for his side’s second goal.

The momentum was very much with Moneyglass as Colm Duffin fired over his third point of the evening in the 9th minute with Niall McCann replying with St. Teresa’s second point of the half to briefly relieve the pressure.

Back came St. Ergnat’s with full-back, Paul Duffin getting forward to split the posts and Aidan McErlain adding another to move his side six ahead as they continued to dictate matters.

John Mallon struck a fine 2 pointer in an effort to get his side back into contention but it was immediately cancelled out as Conor Boyd raised the visitor’s third green flag of the evening.

Mallon was doing everything in his power to get the home side going and he added another 2 pointer with 8 minutes remaining but it was to no avail with Ronan Campbell and Paul Duffin, with his second of the evening responding for the visitors.

The final point of the evening would fall to St. Teresa’s but at this stage St. Ergnat’s had matters well and truly sewn up as they join Sarsfields on 8 points from 4 starts, the Stewartstown Road side recording a resounding 3-18 to 0-9 win away to Glenavy on the same evening.

St. Teresa’s: 1 Brendan Bennett, Aodhan Dugan, 3 Paul Johnston, 4 Ryan Mallon, 5 Conor Mallon, 6 Eoin Connolly, 7 Conor O’Rawe, 8 Colm mcGoldrick, 9 Pierce O’Rawe, 10 John Mallon, 11 Anton Taylor, 12 Sean Maguire, 13 Eoghan Hamill, 14 Niall McCann, 15 Paul McGoldrick
