5 star performance to win battle of the Glens

Shane O’Neill’s 5-21 Con Magee’s 2-13

Report and Photographs: Pete Hyndman

A seven goal  thriller at Pairc Uí Fhearsithe today captured everything that championship hurling is all about. Two strong physical sides gave their all with score’s a plenty and some fantastic goals, some great tackling and superb point taking.

Con Magee’s showed early promise when just after forty seconds Declan Traynor goaled for an early lead.

This gave the home side an early kick up the backside as Ciaran Magill struck a point and he followed up with a cracker of a goal, a superb unstoppable effort. Daniel Black also pointed a free before the versatile Darren Hamill sent over a “65”, giving the home team a three point lead.

James Duffin replied from a free for the visitors before Magill for Glenarm struck his second point.

Glenravel’s Rian Lennon hit a point from 40 yards but again back came the Blue’s with Kevin O Boyle rifling the sliotar beyond Ronan O Donnell for a good goal.

After a short water break the hosts hit 1-04 without reply. First effort came from a clearance from defence where Sean O Boyle claimed the ball and took a delightful point. Hamill hit his second point from another”65″ followed by more great attacking play from Glenarm with Kevin O Boyle striking a nice score from the wing.

Dan Black was next to show his intent in this game when he picked the sliotar up and went on one of his trademark runs, evading tackle after tackle before sending a rasper to the net for Glenarm’s third major.

Decky Traynor sent over a point to interrupt the Glenarm dominance and Niall Donnelly followed with another for the visitors with a converted free.

Black replied from a free, but this was cancelled out with Donnelly hitting his second point in as many minutes.

Shane O Neill’s Sean O Boyle hit his second point on twenty eight minute’s and

with the short whistle beckoning Glenravel raised their game somewhat with three points. Traynor got in for his third score followed by two more frees for Donnelly to give the visitors some hope for the second half.

Shane O Neill’s  3-10      Con Magees  1-08

The second half resumed with early pressure from the visitors and Traynor sent a delightful point from a sideline cut and another Donnelly followed from another free.

Daniel Black slotted over a free for the home side with wing forward Dylan McLaughlin adding to the Glenarm scorecard as Glenarm found a response and Sean O Boyle punished a slack clearance with another Glenarm score.

Donnelly for the green and white’s showed his accuracy from two more  frees, with James Duffin also pointing as the Con Magee’s battled hard to keep in touch.

The home side needed a lift and this arrived with Ciaran “Murph” O Boyle soloing through and stunned Glenravel with an excellent goal. In the next few moments Aidan Scullion sent the ball forward from a lovely sideline cut and Sean O Boyle jumped highest and won the ball before turning his marker and ramming it home for Glenarm’s fifth major.

Just before the last water break Glenravel Donnelly handed the visitors a lifeline when he fired to the Glenarm’s net but they needed a strong finish if they were to overturn a substantial Glenarm lead.

The break came at a good stage for the hosts however as the remaining quarter belonged to the home side.

Dan Black accurately converted a free with McLaughlin slotting over his second score of the game before the score of the game came from a massive effort from 80 yards from young Aidan Scullion which brought loud applause from the home support.

In a two minute spell, some great work from Glenarm led to Darren Hamill   converting two  “65’s” and another free  by Black was added to with ‘Murph’ O’Boyle taking a point out on the wing. The final effort was from Black with another clinical finish from a free and shortly afterwards the referee called for the ball.

This game had it all, some great point taking, in particular the free-taking from Donnelly for the visitors, and from Hamill and Black for the hosts. Both defences worked well especially Glenarm’s with the Hamill brothers, Decky McDermott, Ben O Boyle and Aidan Scullion all showing promise.

Best for the visitors where James Duffin, Brian “Twig” O Neill with Declan Traynor and Niall Donnelly taking their score’s well.

For Glenarm the goals came at crucial stages and totally deflated the opposition. The O’Boyle brothers and Murph O Boyle (no relation) took their goals well, with Magill and Black being a constant thorn in Glenravel’s  side.

Loughgiel get over the Ballycastle hurdle

Bathshack Senior Hurling Championship – Group 1 – Round 2

Loughgiel: 1-27  Ballycastle : 2-20

A spell of dominance on either side of half time saw Loughiel secure at least a quarter final place in the Bathshack Antrim Senior Hurling Champions at Paric MacUilin on Saturday at the expense of Ballycastle. In a high scoring and exciting game Ballycastle played some great hurling and led at the first half water break. However the ten minutes before half time and the opening minutes of the second half saw the game get away from them and though they fought back to within four points at the end, that spell in the second quarter had left them too much to do.

The semi-final place in this group will be decided next Saturday in Loughgiel when the Shamrocks host fellow Group 1 leaders Rossa in what promised to be a great contest. Despite suffering two defeats in their two opening game Ballycastle are still in the mix, as indeed are their opponents next weekend, Naomh Eanna, and their game at Pairc MacUilin next Saturday is a showdown for a quarter final spot.

Loughgiel’s Christy McGarry in action against Ballycastle’s Oran Donnelly.

With Ciaran Clarke leading the line the Town started well in this game and two pointed frees by the corner forward put them ahead. It was score for score for a while as Clarke’s county team mate James McNaughton started finding the target for the Shamrocks and the home team’s lead fluctuated between 1 and 2 points and Clarke (3), Conor Boyd and Ciaran Butler found the target for the Town, while McNaughton (2), Paul Boyle and Dan McCloskey replied for the Shamrocks.

0-7 to 0-6 ahead at the first water break Ballycastle got a great boost when Ciaran Clarke cut through for a great individual goal at the start of the second quarter to put his team four clear on in the 17th minute.

James McNaughton came back with three in a row for Loughgiel, two from frees and one from play, and though Clarke replied with one at the other end, a goal from McNaughton put Loughgiel in front for the first time.

That goal produced a big momentum swing as the next six points came from Loughgiel sticks as McNaughton hit three while Christy McGarry, Paul Boyle and Dan McCloskey hit one apiece to open up a seven point gap, though Clarke showed his class again as he sent over three points in as many minutes to cut the gap to four at the break.

Just when it appeared Ballycastle were getting to grips again Loughgiel pulled away with four points inside two minutes at the start of the second half and the lead was out to eight, but they clawed their way back with a series of good points, and when a long free from inside his own half dropped in around the Loughgiel ‘square’ Conor Boyd got a touch to send it to the Loughgiel net.

It was game-on once again as the teams went down the home straight, but Loughgiel were able to hold the Town at bay and in the end four points separated the sides

Emphatic Cuchullains cruise past Tir na nOg

Bathshack Senior Hurling Championship

Group 2

Tir na nOg 0-7 Dunloy 4-38

Saturday August 28

Brendan McTaggart reports from Whitehill

If Tuesday day night was them blowing off the cobwebs, today was the Cuchullains throwing the shackles off.  This was as close to a 60 minute performance from the reigning champions as they put a message out to the rest of the county, they are still the team to beat.  It was unfortunate for Tir na nOg that Gregory O’Kane’s men had put this type of performance in against them.  Dunloy were irresistible, relentless, efficient, just plain class as they tore the home side apart from the first whistle.

Dunloy made one change from their drawn game against Cushendall with Eamon Smyth coming in for Paul Shiels.  Aaron Crawford pushed into midfield to allow Smyth to play at centre half and both Cuchullains excelled.

It was the Dunloy attack that was simply awesome however.  4-33 from open play, 11 different scorers with seven points coming from their bench in the second half.  Dunloy purred quickly into top gear and remained there for the vast majority of the hour, exposing a gulf between the two sides that proved to be insurmountable for the 2020 Intermediate Champions.

Sean Duffin did the majority of the scoring for the Randalstown side with two of his five points coming from open play but the Whitehill men couldn’t get any change from a hugely impressive and disciplined Dunloy defence.  The Cuchullains defensive unit didn’t concede a free within scoring range until the 28th minute of the game and that was close to the half way line.

Keelan Molloy added to his highly impressive display against Cushendall with a further four points from midfield while Conal Cunning top scored with 1-9 before coming off after the second half waterbreak, his partnership with Chrissy McMahon on the inside forward line continues to blossom with McMahon raising five white flags over the hour.  Cunning’s goal came just before the first half water break after good work from Elliott on the left to find space and pick a pass for ‘Coby’ and the Dunloy man made no mistake.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The three remaining Dunloy goals came from Seaan Elliott (two) and Eoin O’Neill, all in the second half as the Cuchullains showed no signs of dropping their intensity levels.  There was already 20 points between the sides when O’Neill punished an error in the Tir na nOg defence after a poc out from Kevin Sheerin went loose.

Seaan Elliott’s goal came from similar circumstances with the Cuchullains pressurising the Tir na nOg restart while the fourth goal was cruel on the home side.  O’Neill’s shot was stopped superbly by Sheerin but Elliott was on hand to finish and add further gloss to the scoreline for the Cuchullains.

Tir na nOg had chances at the other end but the Dunloy defence were imperious, superbly marshalled by Conor McKinley and organised by Ryan Elliott in goals throughout.

Both sides are on their travels next Sunday with Cushendall hosting Tir na nOg while Dunloy visit Corrigan Park and while it looks likely the Randalstown men’s championship race will finish in Pairc Mhuire, who goes directly through to the semi-final is still up for grabs but the Cuchullains have put themselves in pole position with this display.

Sarfields get back on track with win over St Paul’s

Andersonstown Social Club Antrim Intermediate Hurling Championship Group 2

Sarsfields 1-23 St Paul’s 0-13

Paul McIntyre reports from The Bear Pit.

Fourteen man Sarsfields gave their championship campaign the shot in the arm it badly need with a convincing thirteen point win over neighbours St Paul’s at the Bear Pit on Saturday afternoon.

Played in soaring temperatures before a big crowd, Collie McGuiness’ side controlled this contest for the majority, although he was glad to see half time following the dismissal of wing back Caolán Mervyn. Mervyn was given a straight red for his part in an off the ball incident after referee Darren McKeown consulted with his umpires in the 26th minute.

St Pauls outscored their opponents in the closing stages of the half with Stephen Rooney and Caolán Crossan taking the battle to the hosts, but in the second half it was all one way traffic as Sarsfields turned a five point lead into a convincing win with Niall McKenna and Daniel McKernan to the fore.

As hard as St Paul’s tried, they couldn’t scale the heights that saw them claim an opening day win over Cloughmills as Sarasfileds showed no mercy by taking points at every opportunity and keeping the scoreboard ticking over.

It was a display full of heart and passion and one dedicated to Sarsfields stalwart Sean McGuiness who is seriously ill in hospital. Sean’s sons Collie and Niall are in charge of the Lenadoon outfit and the players were quick to dedicate the win to one of Ulster’s best hurling ambassadors and his family at this tough time.

The game started at breakneck speed. Donal McKernan clipped over a sideline ball before Cailllin Caldwell doubled the lead straight from the restart.

Crossan opened St Paul’s account from a free in the 6th minute but it was all Sarsfields and further score from Gary Lennon, McKenna and Donal McKernan opened up a four point gap after only 8 minutes.

Sean Lawell and Carson did manage to cut the arrears to two points but Daniel and Donal McKernan restored the four point buffer.

Joe Gillen kept St Paul’s in the tie by denying Caldwell a goal in the 15th minute before Michael Johnston shot wide from a tight angle. Instead, they had to settle for Lennon adding his second of the day and at the first waterbreak Sarsfields were well in command at 0-8 to 0-3.

Sarsfields then opened up a six point lead, 0-10 to 0-4. A sweeping move involving Darragh McGuiness and McKenna was finished off by Daniel McKernan before the homeside lost Mervyn after that tussle with Carson.

St Paul’s pushed up on the Sarsfields sweeper for the closing stages of the half and the move seemed to be paying off, however the final act of the half was left to Daniel McKernan who steadied a rocky period for his side with the final score of the half.

Half time score, Sarsfields 0-12 St Paul’s 0-7.

St Paul’s trailed by nine at half time in their opening group game in which they managed to comeback and win, but Sarsfields denied them that opportunity with a very productive and workmanlike performance.

No sooner than had the second half started, McKenna and Daniel McKernan pointed for a seven point lead. Despite the best efforts of Anthony Gallagher and Cairbe O’Caireallain, St Paul’s weren’t able to make any serious inroads into the Sarsfields lead and with David Ward’s razor-sharp puck outs continually picking out Daniel McKernan, it was hard to see how St Paul’s were going to find a way back into the contest.

Daniel McKernan was a constant thorn in the side of St Paul’s all day, not only from frees but also with his direct running and when he pointed for the ninth time in the 51st minute, it gave his side a nine point lead at 0-20 to 0-11.

The game was well beyond St Paul’s now but they didn’t give up the ghost and Ward had to react sharply to deny Carson a goal in the 55th minute.

One goal did arrive in stoppage time.

Caldwell was fouled in the square and with the last puck of the game, player of the match Daniel McKernan stepped up to lash the to the net from the resulting penalty and to cap off a fine all round team display.

McFerran the hero as Rasharkin make it two from two

All Saints 2-16  Rasharkin 3-24

St. Mary’s Rasharkin made it two wins from two starts in Group 1 of the Casement SC Junior Hurling championship when they defeated All Saints, Ballymena at Slemish Park today. Seven points separated the division 3 side from their division 4 opponents in the end but the Ballymena management will be pleased at some aspects of their side’s performance if not the final result.

Conor McFerran got the visitors off the mark with a point in the 1st minute but All Saints replied through Ciaran Neeson and Luke O’Rawe to take the lead with five minutes gone. Conor McKeever and Conor McFerran edged St. Mary’s ahead once more but points from Colm and Ciaran Neeson saw All Saints hit the front once more by the 13th minute.

The Slemish Park side were giving as good as they got at this stage but Rasharkin began to settle, hitting three unanswered points through Conor McKeever 0-2 and Donagh Quigg before the excellent Ciaran Neeson replied from a free in the 17th minute to keep his side very much in touch.

Conor McFerran was proving a handful for the All Saints defence and he struck with the game’s opening goal in the  in the 19th minute and followed with a point to put a bit of daylight between the sides.

Neeson was keeping the All Saints score card moving pretty much on his own at this stage as he replied from another free but Conor McFerran’s influence on the game was increasing by the minute and he struck with a second goal and two points in a three minute spell with Conor McFerran adding another to put the visitors in control.

All Saints were battling hard to get back into contention with Ciaran Neeson bringing his first half total to 0-6 and Colm Neeson adding another but a late McKeever point gave St. Mary’s a fairly comfortable looking eight point lead as the half time whistle sounded.

Half Time Score:

Rasharkin 2-13

All Saints 0-11

If All Saints were to get themselves back into the game then a good start to the second half was important but it was visitors Rasharkin who came racing out of the starting traps and Conor McFerran fired to the net for their third goal with only a minute gone to move them 11 in front and it looked a long way back for the home side.

They increased that lead to 14 by the fourth minute through Tiernan O’Boyle, Donagh Quigg and Conor McKeever before Ciaran Neeson finally opened the home side’s second half account from a free in the 6th minute.

The visitors rang the changes at this point and for the first time in the half All Saints began to enjoy a wee bit of success with Ciaran Neeson 0-2, and Colm Neeson replying with points and Damian Gillan getting in for a goal in the 26th minute to give his side a glimmer of hope.

That hope was quickly extinguished however as Rasharkin made a decisive response to finish strongly, hitting the final five points of the game without reply through the superb McKeever 0-4, and Tiernan O’Boyle to run out convincing winners in the end.

This win ensures Rasharkin a place in the play-offs while Lamh Dhearg, who have three points from 2 starts are favourites to join them but Davitt’s are not out of the running and a win in their final game against All Saints would put them in with a shout.

All Saints: Ciaran Cassley, Brendan McDonnell, Chris McAffee, Kevin Brady, Padraig Magill, Luke O’Rawe, Colm Neeson, Vincent Esler, Gary Miskella, Cormac Magill, Damian Gillan, Ciaran Neeson, Daire Hasson, Eoghan Daly, Jack Magill.

 Rasharkin : 1 – Liam Tunney, 2 – Conor Doherty, 3 – Aidan McKeever, 4 – Daniel Doherty, 5 – James Scally, 6 – Shane Hasson, 7 – Daniel Hasson, 8 – Emmet McFerran, 9 – Declan McKay, 10 – Tiernan O’Boyle, 11 – Fearghal Kennedy, 12 – Ruairi O’Boyle, 13 – Conor McFerran, 14 – Donagh Quigg, 15 – Conor McKeever
