Tommy McCann and his team were busy over the weekend as P3
and P4 hurlers from the South West tasted Airborne Indoor hurling for the first
time at St. Patrick’s College and St. Louis Grammar in Ballymena.
Tommy has been a strong promoter of hurling over many years in the South West and his efforts and those of the South West committee have been instrumental in strengthening hurling in clubs within the divisional board.
On a bitterly wet and cold Saturday morning the indoor venues provided a warm and welcoming venue for those taking part with some excellent hurling played and all those involved should be applauded for their efforts.

Sunday’s North Antrim Indoor Hurling League Under 8 finals day at the Seven Towers Leisure Centre proved to be a great day for Naomh Padraig, the boys from north Antrim taking three of the six honours on offer, including the top prize of all, the Section 1 title. The day had been going good for the club at this stage anyway with the Divisions 3 and 5 titles already in the bag, but adding the top honours by beating a great club like Cushendall in the Section 1 final really made is special.
The winning Naomh Padraig teams Team captain Cillian Bellew receives the Section One Shield from Martin Magee
In that final Killian Cassidy, son of former Derry
footballer Joe Cassidy, grabbed the opening goal. Ruairi Og hit back to level
the game with a goal from Oliver Mooney and the sides were deadlocked at half
time. The score that settled this great contest came midway through the second
half when John Og Darragh, a young man with more than a little Cushendall blood
in his veins, fired in the winner to spark scenes of great celebration among
the Naomh Padraig fans.
The signs were good for the club when they won the Section
5 final earlier in the day beating Eoghan Rua Coleraine by 5 goals to nil,
Ruairi McQuillan, son of Cushendun legend Rory, and Shane McClelland sharing
the goals as they led by 3-0 at the break. The two boys then went on to add a
goal apiece in the second half to seal a convincing 5-0 win.
In the Section 3 decider it was much tougher against an excellent Omagh St Enda’s side who pushed the North Antrim boys to the limit, Naomh Padraig getting over the line by 1 goal to nil.
Ballycastle who won Section 6 and Section 2
The day started with a win over Ballycastle in the
Section 6 final, a really hard fought game that saw the young McQuillan’s edge
a 2-1 win, both goals coming from Eoin McCloskey. In the Section 4 decider
Loughgiel Shamrocks took the honours with a 6 -1 win over Omagh St Enda’s, four
of the goals coming from Daniel Christie.
Section 4 winners Loughgiel
The Section 2 final saw Ballycastle take the honours with a big win over Loughgiel. Conor Bailey and Dara McShane were the scoring heroes for the boys in black and amber.
6 teams competed at Randalstown in the North Antrim U-14 Airborn Division 3 Tournament. Both Creggan and Tir Na Nog won 4 games each. St. Ergnats, All Saints and Loughuile won 2 games each whilst Glenravel won their last game against Loughuile. All 6 teams will compete again next Saturday, 22 February 2020, in the same venue in the semi-final stages
Storm Dennis has played havoc with GAA fixtures across the
country and today’s U20 game between Antrim and Derry at Dunsilly and tomorrow’s
meeting of Antrim and Offaly in Tullamore are amongst the casualties.
A game that did go ahead was Cross & Passion,
Ballycastle’s meeting with Loreto Kilkenny in the All Ireland Colleges Camogie semi-final
but unfortunately it proved a bridge too far for the Ulster champions but we
will bring you a report from that game later.
Ruairi Ogs Cushendall
The Saffron Gael was in Dunloy this morning for the start of
the Airborne indoor league and while today’s action was only a dry run for the
real competition that starts next week, last year’s division 1 winners Oisins
look the team the rest will have to beat again this year.
After photographing the division 1 sides taking part I was on my way to Dunsilly only to receive a phone call from a colleague to say that the Ulster U20 football quarter-final between Antrim and Derry had been called off after a late pitch inspection and we will let you know when that game is re-fixed.
