Saint Comgall’s off the mark

ACFL Division 2

First Win for St. Comgalls

Davitt’s 1-8 St. Comgall’s 1-11

St Comgall’s Antrim put a series of poor results behind them when they travelled to Davitt’s and came away with their first brace of points for the season. Davitt’s were first on the scoreboard with a point but St Comgall’s replied with two Peter McAuley points to take the lead. They continued to press and moved further ahead with another well taken score but Davitt’s came back with a fine score from play. The town continued to enjoy the better of the exchanges and again increased their lead it but they were hit with a goal from the home side which saw the Davitt’s take the lead in the contest for the first time. Despite this setback the heads didn’t drop and St Comgall’s converted a free to leave them trailing by the minimum at the break 1.04 to 0.06

The second half started with Davitt’s increasing their lead but St Comgall’s came straight back and after 10 minutes were level and then edged in front. Back came Davitt’s and it was nip and tuck at this stage and still looked anybody’s game. The luck that has deserted the Antrim men seemed to have turned when they were awarded a penalty which was coolly dispatched by Conor McAuley to put St Comgall’s four ahead. In a tense finish Davitt’s brought it back to two before a Kieran Quinn point secured the league points. This was a great result for Antrim men who started with the game with four minors and brought another off the bench during the game. Maybe this is a sign that youth is the way to go for the Saints
