All County Hurling League Division 2
Oisins 4-11 St Gall’s 2-12
Trailing by 0-2 to 1-5 after ten minutes Glenariff appeared to have a mountain climb in this Division 2 league game at Waterfoot, but the Oisins fought back to turn the game around and run out winners by five in the end.
Visiotrs St Gall’s played brilliantly in that opening period and after Karl Stewart took advantage of slackness in the home team’s defence to fire home a first minute goal they went on to add five points through Stewart (2), Tomas O’Ciaran, Conor Stinton and Mark Napier. Glenariff need to settle but the scores were hard to come by but when Kevin McDonnell swept the ball to the St Gall’s net on fifteen minutes the game suddenly changed. For the remainder of the opening half the Oisins dominated play and four points from Raymond McDonnell and one from Alec O’Boyle inside seven minutes put them in the driving seat. Dan McKillop grabbed his team’s second goal when he got in behind the defence to fire home from closer range and Kevin McDonnell grabbed his second to send them in at the end of a bad tempered first half with a healthy 3-7 to 1-7 lead.
The visitors, who had lost full forward Sean Burke just minutes before the end of the first half, now had a big task on their hands to get back into the game and when Oisins full forward Paul McDonnell goaled within a minute of the restart that task became much harder. To their credit they kept battling bravely, but the free flowing hurling of that opening quarter had now deserted them. Three points from Jackson McGreevey 65s helped close the gap but Paul McDonnell popped over a couple from free for the homes side and Alex O’Boyle added two in quick succession, and though the Saints did manage a late goal it was too little to have an effect on the game.
