Reserve Hurling Championship Cup

Dan McCloskey scores Loughgiel’s opening goal
Loughgiel 3-29 St John’s 1-14
A strong Loughgiel side scored a big win over St John’s in tonight’s opening round of the Reserve Cup Hurling Championship at Fr Healy Park. The Shamrocks were dominant from the start and with Shan McGrath, Dan McCloskey and Barney McAuley in sparking form they were 0-7 to 0-2 ahead by the end of the opening quarter. Two quick points from Niall McCallin and one from a Shea Shannon free brought the Johnnies back into contention but Loughgiel pushed on, and boosted by a Dan McCloskey goal they opened up a 1-14 to 0-5 lead by half time.
The second half saw the Shamrocks even more dominant and goals in the 34th and 36th minutes from Enda Coen and Shan McGrath all but settled the contest. St John’s kept battling away as Shannon and McCallin kept picking off scores against the odds but it was mostly backs to the wall stuff as the home team sent over the points from all angles to finish up winners by 21 points.
