All Saints, Ballymena referee, Owen Elliott was the man in charge of Sunday’s All Ireland Senior Camogie Final between Kilkenny and Cork which ended in a one point win for the Cork girls. Owen has had a long and distinguished career as a club and inter county referee in both hurling and camogie.
He refereed the Camogie National League final in 2009 and a year later was in charge of the All Ireland Intermediate. In 2011 he was in charge of the All Ireland Senior Club Championship final and a year later was the man in the middle in the final of the same competition.
His success as an inter-county referee continued in 2014 when he was appointed to referee the Ashborne Cup final and the same year he refereed the U16 A Final. 2015 saw him in charge of National League Final, Division 1 and the following year he officiated at the All Ireland U18 A Final.
His successful career continued this year when he was appointed again to referee the National League Division 1 final and Sunday’s appointment for the All Ireland Championship final completes a very successful season for the Ballymena man.
Well done to Owen and his officials, Sean “Mucker” Magee and John Sayers from the All Saints Ballymena club, Paul O Neill from the Creggan club and Kieran McGuinness from Newry Shamrocks who accompanied him to Croke Park on Sunday.
He has been extremely fortunate to have other umpires over the years who have been with him through the sunny and snowy days. Vincent Casey RIP, Martin Campbell, Hector Cassley, Damian Elliott, Joe Casey, Ryan O Reilly, Paul Kearney and Harry Bryers.
Undoubtedly we will see you before the season’s out at a much less glamorous be equally important fixture within the county. You have been a great servant to your club, your county and to the GAA and long may your career continue.
